changing the citation style

Hi there, I am trying to use the available citation style for JACC (Journal of American College of Cardiology). However, JACC now requires that references are identified in the text with superscript numerals. Do I need to manually change the code in the style editor? Or is this something that you as zotero editors do? If the former, can you pls give me some more guidance on which part of the code needs to be changed? Thanks so much!
  • My apologies, I had meant to point out other two changes by the journal:

    1) For referenced journal articles the journal name needs to be listed as its Index Medicus (National Library of Medicine) abbreviated title, and not a full name.

    2) For author names, if there are six or fewer authors, all should be listed. However, if there are more than six authors, only first three authors should be listed followed by "et al". Currently, six authors are being listed.

Both of these need to be changed for the style to be consistent with JACC requirements.

    Thank you for your guidance!
  • Hi,

We'd be grateful if you could use a more specific title for threads. They get lost very easily otherwise.

Since you asked, the CSL team is it's separate entity, but works very closely together with the Zotero folk.
The style repository is not only used by Zotero, but can be used by many other softwares as well. Thousands of people use the citation styles.
Therefore, we'd want to have a correct style on our repository and not just help one individual to fix their local style.

Therefore, I'm happy to provide a fix for the style and submit it the style repository.

    Issues:
    1. in-text numerals: the guidelines state: "Identify references in the text by numerals in parentheses on the line" while the typeset papers use superscript numbers.
Was this something an editor asked to be corrected? I ask as sometimes journals want a certain style on submission and change the formatting during their typesetting process.

    2. Journal abbreviation: that is already implemented (although with periods)

    3. et-al rules: that was already implemented correctly.

  • Hi damnation,

Thank you so much for your response and the explanation about the logistics of style changes. I also appreciate your feedback on being more specific when posting, I will keep that in mind next time.

Re: in-text numerals, you are correct. The guidelines on JACC website for authors do state that, but if you actually look at their articles, referenced are identified by superscript. I was also specifically advised to change that by the editorial team: "In your revision, please identify references in the text with superscript numerals."

Re: journal abbreviations, when I've used the current JACC style before, I was not getting the correct output. For example, "Journal of the American College of Cardiology" was being output as such, though it was supposed to be output as "J Am Coll Cardiol" (index medicus). As I am trying it now, it looks like it is actually coming out correctly, so thank you for changing that.

Re: Et al. Same as above, looks fixed.

Thanks again for such a prompt response and help with this. If that issue with in-text numerals could be corrected, that would be wonderful.

    Thanks,
    Petra

You should tell them that they should update their guidelines then.

I have submitted some fixes, but you wouldn't have had access to them, so those two issues being fixed had nothing to do with me. ;)

Here is the style with superscripts: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/citation-style-language/styles/75f9414f0d89668cc63a689088192c35b2fc04b8/journal-of-the-american-college-of-cardiology.csl
  • I WILL tell them! :) Whoever fixed it, I am thankful! And thank you for sharing the style.
  • Well, I fixed it... Haha
