Add item type "dataset"

edited December 7, 2022
In the academic community is is becoming common practice to publish research data. Therefore it would be advisable to define accordingly a/some new Zotero item type(s).

The minimum would be one type called "Research data" or "dataset".

The COAR vocabulary (https://vocabularies.coar-repositories.org/resource_types/) defines even more classes with a higher granularity.

Just for curiosity: where does the Zotero item type palette come from?

Thanks!

The current list (with the exception of preprint) is >15 years old. I think it was based on a couple of standards like PubMed and the then current CSL, plus what the original team considered relevant (hence the somewhat anachronistic support for instant message, e.g.).
Starting with preprint, Zotero has started to update the item types. Standard and dataset are likely going to be among those next in line
  • Hi, thanks to @giacomolanza to start this discussion. A record type dataset is highly demanded. Many people start to upload their data to repositories releasing DOI or want to cite their records. I would really advocate for the integration of this type. Type website or others is a workaround, but not a real solution.
    Thanks!
  • There's really no need to make the case for a dataset item type. It's been clear for years that's going to happen. The above is more than a workaround though: it produces fully correct dataset citations in the citation styles that implement it (e.g. APA) and it's how datasets are imported when using datacite DOIs or when importing from one of many supported data repositories (such as Zendo, Dryad, and Dataverses).
