Can Zotero recognize in-text citations created with a different software & make them Zotero ref?

I Have a document which has properly cited and indexed citations, but were created on Word/Mendeley referencing software. I have been manually changing all citations to Zotero citations, and was wondering whether Zotero can automatically scan a text, find references created in a different referencing software, and convert them to in-text Zotero citations automatically.

I have already imported the citations with AnyStyle and have them in my library, so I am not trying to extract the citations, but would rather keep them where they are and just have Zotero do the work automatically rather than having to go through the whole document and create a new Zotero reference.

Apologies in advance if this has been asked already, but couldn't find anything fitting my question through my description of the problem.

Please let me know if you need any additional information or if I wasn't clear.

Cheers!
  • We just announced automatic relinking of Mendeley citations as a beta feature:

    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/101464/available-for-beta-testing-automatic-relinking-of-mendeley-citations

But if you used AnyStyle to extract the items into Zotero rather than using the Mendeley importer, that wouldn't help you unless you wiped and recreated your library using the importer.
  • Hi,

Many thanks for the reply. Should the automatic re-linking work automatically? (i.e. I open the document and Zotero runs through it and turns them to Zotero references).

If it should be doing that and is not, do you have any suggestions?

I downloaded the beta to test this out.

To be clear, it is not so important to my situation that the citations are extracted and that I have a record of them in Zotero (or if this is duplicated, they aren't that many and I can just erase the duplicates in a second moment).

I would rather just have them become Zotero references so that they automatically update in my bibliography and most importantly are removed if someone deletes one.

    Appreciate the help!

    Cheers

  • Well, as I say, if you didn't use the Mendeley importer, that feature wouldn't be relevant. You'd have to reimport using the importer.

If you haven't done much with your library yet, it might be easiest to just delete everything in your library and start again with an imported library and the original document from Mendeley.
