Updater is damaged and can't be opened

I recently tried to open Zotero and received an error warning stating "updater is damaged and can't be opened, please move to trash". I am now unable to open Zotero with literally thousand of documents in it and not sure how to proceed. I have searched the forums and not able to find anything that would resemble this problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated in how to move forward.

back-up your Zotero data folder to be extra safe, then download and re-install Zotero (this will leave your data in place and work like an update, so the back-up is just an additional precaution).
