Cite pdf annotation from markdown editor with autocompletion

Hi,
I would like to highlight pdfs and then easily cite the single annotation, for example typying @ and the editor pop-up the list of all annotations.
I would like something like that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZQSCQGCiJQ.
I really appraciate any kind of help
  • The video is with the old notes extraction system of ZotFile. See explanations here: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/zotfile_extract_annotations
You can simply use drag & drop from the built-in PDF Reader to easily cite a single or multiple annotations. See more details in the "Adding Annotations to Notes" link mentioned in the link above.

    Thank you for the reply.
If I drag and drop the annotation I get an html element and not a clickable markdown zotero link that redirect me to the annotation in the pdf.
I saw that maybe mdnotes could help me in doing such a thing but I have no idea how to achieve it.
  • Do you drag & drop into a Zotero note or to an external note taking app?

If you are using another note taking app, you can say which app you are using, and someone using a similar workflow may be able to give you more information. There may be app specific plugins that could help you.
The drag & drop behaviour to outside Zotero is controlled by the Quick Copy options:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/preferences/export

The note taking functionalities in the Zotero notes are nicely integrated with the built-in PDF Reader. You can make annotations in a Zotero note first and then export the Zotero note to markdown with a right click on the note in the library. That should keep the links to the annotations in the PDF file.
  • It was a problem of the markdown editor.
I still have no idea how to modify the format of the annotation when pasted in the editor.
For now it's something like that

    “TEXT” ([Kaminski et al., 2007, p. 1](zotero://select/library/items/MEWJBV5Y)) ([pdf](zotero://open-pdf/library/items/A45K64BY?page=1&annotation=WFPFFVIU))

And I would like something like the following:

    [Kaminski et al., 2007, p. 1](zotero://open-pdf/library/items/A45K64BY?page=1&annotation=WFPFFVIU)
  • The format you mention is controlled from the Note Templates:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/note_templates
    originally discussed in this thread:
    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/93521/available-for-beta-testing-markdown-export-of-notes/p1

I think the format you would like to get is currently not possible to do in the Note Templates, so it would be a feature request, as discussed in the thread above.
I don't know if any plugin could do that.
  • Hello,
    Thanks again for the answer.
I have already seen this possibility but in the configuration settings I see the html code while when I paste the annotations they are in html format.
I also don't know how to get rid of the annoying characters wrapping around the annotation.
I posted a video to show you how it behaves: https://www.veed.io/view/6b5876f0-6d36-4313-986a-2c3c24f3a2ef
