BUG: iOS share to Zotero slow/fails to find item and import

edited October 7, 2022
I regularly encounter errors trying to use the ‘share to’ on iOS to import items into my Zotero library. The problems sometimes may occur when attempting to load from an embedded web page (e.g. from a Twitter link that opens an internal browser pane), where there is a pop up requesting to accept cookies or accept GDPR, etc.). However, even after shifting the link to Safari or Chrome and clearing those, some source websites fail to find item/load. Here are some examples:

So far, these import from Safari or Chrome on MacOS.

(Sorry for the delay in responding. If you think your post has been missed, you really can just ask for an update instead of posting a 1-star review to the App Store…)

All of the links in your first post save for me from Safari. Are those still failing for you, and if so, in what way, exactly?

The first ScienceDirect URL saves for me when logged into a proxy — it just doesn't save a PDF. When not logged in, it hangs trying to download the PDF. Elsevier uses extreme anti-bot measures on ScienceDirect that make it harder to support and keep working than any other site, but we'll see what we can do. We can certainly at least fix the hanging when not logged in — saving the item itself should always be possible even if the PDF can't be downloaded.

If you're having trouble on other sites, let us know.
  • @eejd: All three of those ScienceDirect URLs are now working for me in version 1.0.10 of the app. If you're still having trouble, please let us know.

We'd also appreciate if you would revise your App Store review, which bizarrely claims that the app "has failed to improve basic, core functionality during the entire time I have used it from pre-launch betas to the current version". I don't know how much you've actually used the app, but as we said there:
the app has been under constant development since we launched it. We’ve added all of the most commonly requested features — Add by Identifier, barcode scanning, an eraser tool, a PDF outline view, zotero:// link support — and fixed countless bugs. If there are other things you’d like to see, you should let us know in the forums, but development takes time, and the idea that we haven’t been adding features in response to feedback is just false.
