An addition to my error and the workaround: just deleting ANY one citation fixes it, and I can start inserting citations normally again. Very interesting. Hope this is helpful for others who experience the same bug.

Yes, I have refreshed and it is still there. The workaround I have found is to restart everything, delete the citations in question and reinsert them. That way I have managed to clear the error. Still a nasty little bug...
