Chicago author date doesn't sort citations (the manual gives authors a lot of liberty there, so would be tricky to implement any rule), so the option is absent.

Is this in a table? There's all sorts of weirdness related to using Word fields in tables, so especially multiple citations in a table can cause this. (documents of 100+ pages are not the issue, no).

This is a very longstanding request, and it's definitely on developers' radar, but no, there's not currently an option for it.

To be clear, in almost all cases, in practice, too -- but issues (typically fixable) do occasionally come up. Just make sure you're pasting from Word to Word -- pasting from Google Docs to Word, say, will absolutely not work.
