Import data via RIS format

We're a bit behind the times, but are eager to catch up. We have ~1500 articles/books/etc in our library, and have them cataloged in an excel spreadsheet. We have columns for authors, title, source, date, etc., and are trying to get it entered into Zotero. We're making 1 pass through them to see what we can find on the web for the "quick" import. But, we're ending up with many that will need to be manually input. To address these "manual entry" items, I'm trying to convert our data into RIS format, for importing directly into Zotero. It seems fairly straight-forward, but ...

My immediate problem is that I can't get the import function to work properly. I get the message "The selected file is not in a supported format." I'm working with a file that contains a single, trimmed-down entry. I've also tried exporting a single entry from our Zotero database in RIF format, then re-importing it ... and get the same message.

I get the sense that I'm missing something here, if I can't get Zotero to import an RIS file that it exports. Anybody have any ideas?

Anyone have any other thoughts on possibly better ways to get all this data imported?

Thanks in advance.
  • Post the single failing entry here, in HTML mode, between <code> tags.

And make sure you're running Zotero 2.1.8.
  • Prior to posting the contents of the file, I tried to import these files again and it all worked fine. Hmmm. Not sure what happened or what fixed it ... perhaps it was the overnight reboot.

    Thanks, and sorry.
