Search Server API

Hi,

Just a little feature request.
The server API should integrated a search function, to allow users to search through all referenced URLs, with some statistics, like how many users referenced it, and usefull to find related articles.

It can be usefull to mesure the impact of an article, or more.
  • Something like this is nominally on the roadmap: http://www.zotero.org/support/development_roadmap

But it's been there for a while, and I don't know how close it is to becoming a reality.
  • Is it possible to contribute?

It's totally possible to contribute. I have no clue what has been done on this front, but see http://www.zotero.org/getinvolved/ and send a note to zotero-dev (http://groups.google.com/group/zotero-dev), and maybe the core developers can help get you up to speed on that piece of the project.

Most of the core client and server code has been written by people at CHNM, but significant work has been done by other contributors before, including the complete rewrite of the citation formatting engine (by Frank Bennett, fbennett on the forums), style development (by many, including Sebastian Karcher, adamsmith on the forums), work on the Scaffold IDE (by Frank, Rintze Zelle, and me), translator development (by many, including Erik Hetzer, who wrote a radical new framework to speed development, and me), the multilingual Zotero project (by Frank), and a small constellation of plugin and additional interfaces (Zotfile, ZoteroQuickLook, etc. for Zotero, ZotPress for WordPress, pyzotero, Gnotero, LyZ,...). [This list is far from complete-- apologies to the many people I've left out. My point is mainly that there are many people contributing, and this is a great time for more people to get involved.]

So it's possible and highly encouraged to contribute your skills.
  • though preceding actual development, I believe the question of what parts exactly of the data will be used/usable, if and how users can opt out of this etc. need to be cleared up. My guess would be that a good number of Zotero users are rather sensitive to these types of questions.
  • Of course, there is a big problem with privacy! All datas should be anonymized before indexed.
But then, all the datas must be publicly accessible, or anyway, zotero sync can provide an option to keep all datas private.
  • Making this an opt-in, with the additional condition that all publicly viewable user and group libraries are automatically opted-in, seems reasonable to me.
