Multiple notes created automatically

Hi. I'm an enthusiastic Zotero user who now has a fairly large database of references and notes. I have been running into the following problem:

Occasionally when creating a note attached to an entry, Zotero will create multiple notes instead of just one. The behavior appears to be that with each automatic save a new note is created.

I have not been able to observe a pattern when this occurs other than it appears to happen only after I have been using Zotero intensely for a good period of time. Rebooting solves the problem; notes are saved correctly again.

The only other thing I notice is that the switching between items also seems to slow down when this begins to happen. I click on a new entry which shows as selected, but when I click to open a note associated with it, it brings up a note from the previous entry I was working with.

I am running Zotero under Windows.

Regards,

Bill
  • OK, I did some more investigating. The problem seems to only appear when adding notes to entries in a saved search. In that case, a new duplicate note will be created with each auto-save.

I create a note, type a short-word, the note is saved. I close the note, it saves a duplicate.

I create a note, type a short-word, the note is saved, I type some more, a duplicate is created, I type some more, another duplicate is created, and so on.

When I open up a note after it is has been closed, and start adding text to it, I don't get any more duplicates.

If I switch to a folder that is not a saved search and add a note to the same entry I don't get any duplicates.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Bill
  • Sorry, scratch that. The pattern I thought I was detecting was only an artifact of the intermittent occurrence of the problem. I'm now running into the problem of duplicate note creation in several contexts, not just saved searches.

Another problem that may or may not be related is occasionally I go to create a new entry by selecting a new type from the menu and no new record appears in the view, I then switch to the library folder and find blank records. It is as if the system is slowing down and I lose patience before the record appears in the view.

Again, sorry for the earlier confusion.

  • I apologize for the thrashing around but I've found it difficult to identify a repeatable set of actions that lead to the problem. Here is my guess so far:

    Upon starting to use Zotero:
    1. If I start adding notes to entries in regular folders it works fine.
    2. If I start adding notes to entries in saved searches I get duplicates.
    3. At some point after continued use I start getting duplicates when adding notes to entries in regular folders as well.
    4. Once I start getting duplicates, the overall system appears to slow. I notice this mainly because it takes longer than usual (often longer than my patience) for chosen actions to appear on the screen.

What I'm not sure about is number 3 above. I don't know if this is purely a function of time; if I keep using it long enough the duplicates start appearing, or if it is because once the problem is triggered through the saved search view or some other action, it continues elsewhere.

  • Here is the error message I get when duplicate notes are created in a saved search.

Error: this._itemGroup.ref.getID is not a function
    Source File: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/itemTreeView.js
    Line: 212
  • Bill -- thanks for all your hard work tracking this down. I haven't been able to reproduce the duplicate notes behavior, but I was able to generate the same error after adding notes and attachments to a saved search. Your suspicions are also quite likely correct that the other problems were due to fallout from the initial error.

At any rate, this should be fixed in Beta 3, which should be out the door by tomorrow.
  • Just to let you know I'm getting identical behaviour sometime even very soon after fresh restarts. However, I have not received any error messages yet. Are there ever going to be plans to make Zotero an external application that works with Firefox or will it always be integrated? While I'm at it, when will we get keyboard shortcuts?
