An error occurred communicating with zotero (from LibreOffice text doc)

I'm a new user of zotero; the last month things have been working well. Last week I started getting this error:
"An error occurred communicating with Zotero", with:
"Java.lang.NullPointerException
at org.zotero.integration.ooo.comp.comm.getMessageResponse/Comm.java.190"

when I try to insert a citation into any LibreOffice text document - old or new.

I am running the following:
LibreOffice - 3.3.2
FireFox - 5.0
Zotero - 2.1.8

I've looked through some of the other "communicating with Zotero" error threads but haven't found anything that fixes the problem.
