New Style: Journal of Hellenic Studies (Name-Date)

Hello.

I've tried to put together a style for the *Journal of Hellenic Studies* - a major journal in Classics & Ancient History. I've posted it here: git://gist.github.com/1020696.git and would be very grateful for suggestions/corrections/improvements/etc. This is the first time I've tried to do anything like this, so apologies in advance for any idiotic and/or inelegant coding...

I've put the 'Category field' as 'Humanities', since 'Classics' doesn't seem to be a possible option (and 'History' isn't quite right), but am happy to have suggestions for better labels.

One specific question: is there any way to insist on 'and' (rather than '&', or a comma) as the connector in the publisher-place field (for instances where there's more than one publication place)? From my reading of the CSL webpage it looked like the 'and' command could only be used in lists of names of people, but perhaps that's nonsense...

    no there isn't. Your reading of the specs is correct.

    Otherwise this looks good at a first glance. Your missing a closing > at the end of line 128. Also, are you using straight/dumb quotes on purpose? Zotero can do smart quotes.

    Thanks for the v. speedy response! Good spot on the missing > (I corrected an error when I ran it through the validator, and created a new one in the process...)

    On dumb-quotes: I found that the smart-quotes didn't reproduce properly when I generated the bibliography in word (in my default font, anyway: Palatino Linotype) -- they just showed up as strange blobs... But I do prefer smart quotes, so if you know what I might have done wrong then I'll happily put them back in.

    you should get smart (single) quotes automatically in an en-GB Firefox/Zotero copy -

    If you get 'blobs' using the default setting then there is not much to do - I'd still be curious if it worked in an even more standard font like Times New Roman, but Palatino really shouldn't be a problem. If you tried to write the smartquotes into the term section yourself, you probably did something wrong - they're sometimes a bit messy to code.

    If it's fiddly then it might be simplest just to leave it (the DTP package with the journal uses 'smartens' the quotes when files are imported, in any case).

    If everything else looks ok, would it be possible to add the style to the repository?

    I also added en-GB as the default locale (l.2), otherwise everyone submitting from, e.g., the US would run into problems, because all the terms and quotes you define wouldn't apply.

    I'm a little puzzled the smart quotes don't work out of the box - they should. Maybe the locales just haven't been updated yet - the en-GB locale has single smart quotes.

    Anyway - the other thing is that the fact that this is the author-date version of the style should probably be reflected in the id/link as well - how about jhs-author-date?

    Are you affiliated with the journal? Is there any chance to get them to link to the Zotero style from their page?

    Brill: many thanks! Good idea about changing the name to jhs-author-date, too.

    I'll ask the journal to stick a Zotero link on their webpage and in the style guide (I'm on the editorial board).

    Great - I'll let you know once the style is up and you can give them a direct install link for the style.
    What about the note-based style? Is that just MHRA? If so, should we include that as a dependent style (i.e. a copy of MHRA that's called jhs-note)?

    The note-based style isn't quite MHRA -- I'll need to do a bit more tinkering to sort it out. A project for the next time I have some time spare!
