"Word cannot communicate with Zotero"

Please help,
Ever since I upgraded zotero to 2.1, I always get this message when I try to use it in Word:
"Word cannot communicate with Zotero. Please ensure that Firefox is open and try again."

I have try the recommendation on the troubleshooting page, as well as following advice given to others here, who reported similar problems. Can anyone help me?

My specifics:
Mac OSX 10.5.8
Firefox 3.6.17
Word 2004
Zotero 2.1.7
Latest Python and MacWord Integration extensions.

I have also tried firefox 4 + applicable updates from here, but still to no avail.

    Can you provide a little more detail about what you've tried? Also, do you have a non-English version of Word?

    I have tried reinstalling firefox (3.6.16 and 3.6.17) and each of the 3 extensions (Zotero, Python and Word Int.). I have also tried reinstalling the word integration components, as is found in the zotero preferences under "Cite".
    I do not have a non-english version of word, I am using wordMac 2004, in English.
