"Drag and Drop"

Adamsmith -

Prior to the recent Z and FF updates, I'd simply drag and drop a url I wanted to save into a file I created in Z. Now, however, when I highlight the url and then drag to my targeted folder it does nothing.

I have since re downloaded Z's updates, twice, and restarted twice.
  • Is there a reason I've received no input, advice or direction regarding my Z challenge?

I have increased my storage thinking that was my problem and it is not.

Again, prior to the recent Z update, all I had to do was highlight a url and drag it to a folder inside my Z window. I cannot do this anymore. Why? How do I get this corrected?

    And please respond this time.

Please try and exercise a little more patience. Most people helping out here are volunteering their own time.

You can make support questions easier to respond to by providing ample background information. For instance:

    * what Zotero version?
    * what FF version?
    * what URL are you trying to drag into Zotero?
    * are you dragging it into a local collection or into a group or group collection?

Also, for next time, try to find a discussion title that clearly reflects your support question. "Drag and drop" is too general and will lead many people to overlook the fact that you are having a very specific issue.
  • mark, thank you for replying.

Yes, I am frustrated with Zotero and its support system and appreciate your volunteering to help folks like me to resolve challenges since downloading the recent Z download. 2.1.6...which appears to be the only recent download.

After attempting to get some direction yesterday, I re downloaded both Z 2.1.6 and Mozilla FF and increased my storage ability. All of this has been stated above.

Yet, when I go to highlight a url and drag it to my folder system it is not saving it ... any of them ....

I do a ton of research for my business and have come to rely on this very helpful tool. When I attempted to contact someone on Sunday when all of this first began, I heard from someone on Monday to bring my question to the forum, which I did.

Rather than starting a new "troubleshooting" thread, I sought out one that was related to my challenge. When I wrote a short description I was then advised to start a new thread, which I did yesterday for which I've recv'd no comment, direction, suggestion or advice.

I now have several windows open that I need to save but can't.

    Please advise.
  • Give an example of a URL. For example, I can drag a link to a PDF file like this into my library and it will be saved. I can also drag a link to zotero.org into my library.

But I cannot drag either into some group libraries. Are you trying to do that?

Also, please be sure to consult this extensive support page on archiving the web. The solution may be there.
  • Here is one of several examples - http://ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf and another http://carlbernstein.com/magazine_cia_and_media.php

I am dragging it to my library. Not a group library.
  • btw, I just finished watching the sales video on the home page and my Z dashboard looks nothing like the one in the vid. Moreover, I have no icon in the address bar that allows me to save either as shown in the vid.
  • Mark, the "archiving" commands worked.

Now, if we could only get the drag and drop to work.

    You'd make my day!
  • Please read through these instructions: http://www.zotero.org/support/getting_stuff_into_your_library

    In particular, look here: http://www.zotero.org/support/getting_stuff_into_your_library#archive_web_pages

You'll want to click on the "Create New Item from Current Page" icon in the Zotero pane while viewing the page of interest.

And note that there was no sales video, and no paid support service. Zotero is a completely free product, made by and for researchers, and the only thing you can ever pay for is extra storage space on the Zotero servers, which has nothing to do with anything but storing items on the Zotero servers.
  • Dragging a PDF link into the library works fine for me. If it doesn't work for you, provide a Debug ID for the drag attempt.

And I'm glad to hear Mark's advice helped.

    As for drag-and-drop, see http://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_bugs
If you can, submit an error report as explained on that page.

[Edit: Do what Dan says instead-- the error report is indeed unlikely to have useful information, so you'll need to submit debug output for an attempt to drag-and-drop.]
  • Thank you, ajlyon.

I don't know what you call the video on the homepage, but I call it a sales video. My decision to use this service was based on that very well done video i.e., it sold me.

Yes, I have increased my storage space and not clear where you got the idea that I thought anything more.

I am simply trying to resolve a problem that I did not have prior to my downloading Z's recent upgrade and have now been learning to work within Z's system to get it resolved.

Thank you for your volunteer time.
  • Dan,

Followed the instructions in the Debug link and sent the info. Hope this helps.
  • No, you didn't.
After uploading the output, Zotero will provide a Debug ID that you can post to the forums.
  • I clicked "submit to Zotero servers" under the Advance tab in Preferences.

Note - I followed the Debug Output Logging instructions. Now implementing "Real-time Debug Output"
  • I asked you for a Debug ID. The page I linked to, and which I just quoted to you, says to post the Debug ID here. We can't help you without a Debug ID.

I said nothing about generating "Real-time Debug Output". Don't.

You're going to need to follow our instructions or ask somebody to help you in person.
  • The Debug ID is D699008839.
  • All I'm seeing in that debug output is an auto-sync. First, temporarily disable auto-syncing in the Sync pane of the Zotero preferences. Then clear any existing debug output and provide another Debug ID for another attempt at dragging a link.

Provide a Report ID as well.

And just to be sure, be tell us precisely what you're doing—literally, what you're clicking on, where you're dragging to, what's happening or not happening—as explained on that Reporting Bugs page.
  • Actually, it's not clear that this is even an auto-sync, though I'm not sure why you would've included a manual sync in the debug output...
  • Dan, all I did was follow the instructions. I am not a techie which I'd think is obvious. I am a researcher thus, if you say it's manual then its manual or auto-sync it's auto-sync or gobbleygook it's gobbleygook I'd take you at your word.

    Please advise.
  • A manual sync means clicking the Sync icon. An automatic sync is triggered automatic by an edit or by opening the Zotero pane.

But really, I can't spend any more time on this thread, and we can't reproduce the problem. If someone else reports this and can provide sufficient debugging info, we'll look into fixing it. In the meantime, use the other methods explained above to save pages to your library.
  • Debug ID is D494432703
  • attempt failed.
