APA 6th Edition: Citing a web site...

Hello,

It seems the option to cite a website/page is missing from Zotero 2.1.6 with APA (6th Ed.). I am wondering if anyone knows how I might be able to ADD the option to cite a webpage/website to be used both in-line with text and in the bibliography?

I have searched the heck out of this topic and can't find any information. The general Zotero cite mentions editing some CSL file but the instructions are too complex for this non-technical user.

Anyone can help?
  • Could you be more specific as to what you mean by "missing"? I thought APA did websites correctly, but I'm not sure.

Or do you mean that you cannot create a webpage item? That's unrelated to APA (and, for course, you can - you can just not create a new, empty webpage item).
  • If someone were wanting to add a website in apa (6th edition) format using Zotero how would one do that? There is no option in Zotero that says website. Do we just go with the blog citation? Also, zotero pull in that information on its own without a doi or without a pmid?

    Any suggestions/help is appreciated.
  • Add website items by going to the website and use "Create New Item from Current Page" (in Zotero for Firefox) or right-click "Take Zotero Snapshot of Current Page" (in the Chrome/Safari connector).

If you need to add a website manually, add an item of any item type and change it to website in the right-hand pane.

If a site has a DOI or a PMID it's likely not a website.

For most websites you'll want to manually hedit the information Zotero pulls in: As opposed to journal publishers or library catalogs, websites don't provide Zotero with full metadata to pull in.
  • Thank you Adam. I was hoping I could be lazy and let Zotero do the work for me pulling all of that information in (been spoiled by when it does do all the work). I was able to add it manually and change the type to website and I can live with that. However, I don't think my Zotero in Firefox plugin is working correctly. Isn't there supposed to be an icon to the right of the url box?

And, you're right about the DOI and PMID not being a website (don't know what I was thinking) -- the DOI, I know, is for journal articles. I'm not sure about the PMID.

    Again, thanks a bunch!
  • no, there is only an icon in the URL bar if Zotero is supporting the site (and hence it gets you all the citation info).
  • Got it and good to know. I haven't seen the icon yet so I thought it wasn't working or I had done something wrong.

DOIs are used for documents other than journal articles. Books, book chapters, conference papers, reports, etc. all can be ( and have been) assigned a DOI.

PMID numbers are assigned only to documents indexed in the PubMed database. Until a couple of years ago, the documents in PubMed were mostly limited to journal items (articles, editorals, letters) and conference papers. More recently, books and reports are included -- some of these are added retroactively. If a journal article is not indexed in PubMed it does not have a PMID. Thus, a majority of journal articles do not have PMID numbers.

you should see the book icon on this page, e.g.

  • DWL-SDCA, thank you for the info. Doi is fairly new to me. I've been looking, so far, at only journal articles and one conference paper with it. PMIDs are even newer to me so I appreciate the response explaining the types of documentation they are attached to.

Adam, I did see the book icon on the link you posted so I know that my plug-in is working. Thank you for the help!
