Add-on for Word:Mac not working

I've followed the instructions numerous times including the troubleshooting ones.

+ i go to install word processor plug-in

+ zotero 2.1 (that is my version: i've also uninstalled it and reinstalled it in case)

+ OS X: firefox verson 3.6, i installed Install PythonExt (also right clicked on it and saved it to the desktop and dragged it.)

+ restarted firefox

+ installed "Install the Word for Mac Plugin for Zotero 2.1 (Firefox extension)" (also dragged and did same as above)
I have Word 2004, version 11.1

+ restarted Firefox and got: "Zotero MacWord Integration: Installation could not be completed because an error occurred. Please ensure that Microsoft Word is closed, and then restart Firefox."

Word is not open, i've restarted my computer, restarted firefox, uninstalled PythonExt, reinstalled it, uninstalled Zotero as a whole, reinstalled...

i also went to my zotero and reported errors there (that was before un/reinstalling it...

is there a bug or am i doing something wrong?
I've followed all the instructions

You need to provide a Report ID for the error.
  • [JavaScript Error: "no element found" {file: "https://db3prd0104.outlook.com/owa/keepalive.owa" line: 1}]
    Report ID: 573940851
  • each time i restart firefox, it says
Installation could not be completed because an error occurred. Please ensure that Microsoft Word is closed, and then restart Firefox.

There are no Zotero errors in there. Are you sure you provided that after triggering the error? If so, restart Firefox and try again.
  • ok i just uninstalled and reinstalled the Word Plugin.

  • .... any suggestions still?

You appear to be running the very first version of Firefox 3.6, which is extremely old. (It was released in January of last year.) You should either upgrade to the latest 3.6 version—currently 3.6.17—or, preferably, upgrade to Firefox 4.0. And make sure you have automatic upgrades enabled in Firefox, because you really don't want to be running such an old browser version.
  • Dan,

Thanks for your help but I just dont know anymore.
I've not upgraded to 4.0.1 firefox.
    i uninstalled zotero.
I then started all over again, installed it, then tried again to add the word plug-ins,
and the same thing is happening..."close word" etc.

my report id this time is: 1333698378
  • i mean i *just* upgraded to 4.0.1

OK, now you're showing an error:
    Permission denied: '/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office
Check the permissions of that directory to make sure it's editable by your current user account.
  • yes. it is.
  • dstillman Zotero Team
That's unlikely, given the error. Either that directory or some files within it are almost certainly not editable by your account (without an admin password, at least).
  • dstillman Zotero Team
It's /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Startup/Word that Zotero needs to write its Zotero.dot file to, by the way.
  • right.
so, i am writer and reader enabled.
i saved the plug-on to my desktop and dragged it into the startup word section...
not sure if that is a viable way to do it, but it gave an option to 'authenticate' - i said yes...
    still not working :)

No, if it asked you to authenticate, your user account does not have proper privileges to that folder or one above it.

And if by "plugin" you mean the XPI you downloaded, that certainly won't work, as that's a Firefox extension. But you can find the Zotero.dot file in extensions/zoteroMacWordIntegration@zotero.org/install within your Zotero data directory. Copying from there might work, though really you should fix the privileges on the directory so that Zotero can install it itself.

It's vaguely possible that Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility would also fix this for you, though probably not.
  • In that case it sounds like the startup folder is not accessible by your current user in OS X-- you need to set it to be writable by your current user, not just the administrator user. You'll need to do Get Info on the Startup folder and change the permissions accordingly, and click the button to change permissions on all the folders within as well.

There should be a walk-through of how to do this online somewhere...
  • HALLELUJAH!

    so :)
now to put the toolbar into word...
    do i add the zotero.org.js ???

thanks dan you have incredible patience ~
or have you been hitting your head to the keyboard?
  • GOT IT!!!!

    well - it's been fun
  • compile error in hidden module: zotero

    (in word)

Try opening your home directory, navigating to Library/Preferences/Microsoft, and deleting the file named Office Registration Cache 11.

Also, I'm not sure where you got the idea that zotero.org.js has anything to do with this, but it's not even vaguely related to your issue.
  • Deleted.

    Didn't work.
