Boston Globe

I am a new user of Zotero and I am unable to import Boston Globe articles. The error ID I received is 796212200 and the url that I was trying to import is: http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2011/05/03/vocal_critic_of_mayor_of_lawrence_is_beaten/

It is not among known translator errors, but when I try to import it, the pop-up box tells me to check known translator errors...
Thanks!

I don't think there is a boston globe translator - what does it say when you hover your mouse over the symbol in the URL bar?
  • dstillman Zotero Team
There is, but it hasn't been updated since 2008 and may no longer work.
  • I've just confirmed-- the existing translator is completely outdated at this point. This would make a good Framework translator if anyone is interested (http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/translators/framework).
  • sorry, somehow didn't see it and I don't get an icon on that site either.
The known issue page isn't well maintained, we're trying to improve that, but that's still in the works.

I've started fiddling with it, working with old-fashioned DOM methods. If that will be acceptable, I should have something running pretty soon.
  • wow, thanks so much for all your help!
  • Well, that was an interesting experience. Try this and see how it goes: https://gist.github.com/958363 (click the "raw" link, save to disk, then find the Zotero Data Directory via gear menu -> Preferences -> Advanced, and drag the translator into place.

The site is pretty chaotic; with several different ways of organizing pages. Authorship is particularly hard, with badly formatted or plain incorrect information scattered about in locations that are sometimes reliable, sometimes not. This works with the pages I've tried, but that's a small fraction of the content that's in there. If it messes up on any pages that should work, let me know.

This doesn't cover multiple downloads yet. Maybe tomorrow. :)
  • Nice work--- I've commented on the Gist, but the hard work is done. If you decide you'd rather not deal with the multiple, I can do it. Hopefully we'll get this out to all users soon enough.
  • No, now I see why multiple downloads isn't going to happen. We'll do without it for now, since I don't fancy rewriting the lot of it in regular expressions...

This is now in the repository. It should be in the next release of Zotero; in the meantime you can install it yourself:

Please go to http://github.com/ajlyon/zotero-bits/raw/master/The Boston Globe.js and save the file to the translators directory of your Zotero data directory (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data). It should start working again.

Thanks again to Frank for stepping up!
