Citation problems

I am writing a thesis, and am supposed to used the Chicago style of citation e.g. (Adams 2001), normally when I insert a citation after selecting that style it does work, however, sometimes it comes up differently e.g. (W. Adams 2001). Sometimes after adding another citation, it will change previous ones, even though I am not selecting a new style.

Please could anyone help?
