Collection, managment

Fantastic product, love it's simplicity of use.

Have a problem sorting my Collection folders, making sure (remembering) to put a particular reference into a or multiple collection Folders from the Library.

Is there an easy way of doing this other than eye-balling it which is time consuming and awkward with large numbers of references

I'd suggest having a color for each Collection folder and matching color mark or marks on the reference's in the Library to the corresponding Collection folder

Thanks
  • Using color-coding might be a good idea... One thing you can do currently is hold down Alt/Option to highlight the collections that contain the selected item(s).
  • So let me get this right: If 'My Library' and an item within are selected, holding down Alt (on a Windows machine) should highlight all the collections that item is in?

Hadn't come across that before -- anyway, it doesn't work for me (version 1.0.0b4.r2.r1365).
  • Sorry, make that Control on Windows—Option on OS X.
  • Ah, yes, got it, thanks. That's really handy.

It might be better if, when nested collections are collapsed, the superordinate collection icon was also highlighted. This would make sense, particularly for those of us who have extensions.zotero.recursiveCollections set to true.
  • Great tip - thanks!

But agree with JohnT that it would be very useful to be able to see which references in 'My Library' are already allocated to collections. I am finding that when I am downloading a lot of references I sometimes forget to allocate some to collections and that means I just never look at them ever again.

JohnT's suggestion of colour coding could be good (but potentially complicated if the reference is in several collections?). For my purposes, a simple marker (e.g. bold/not bold, or a little symbol) to differentiate those references already in collections from the 'orphan' ones would be very useful indeed.
