title locations, card sorting by numbers, personalization

when i click on a title in the center pane i'd like to be able to see which collections i've saved said item in. I'm trying to integrate my endnote library with my zotero collections and would like to be able to keep track where things are and how many times they are saved.

i'd also like to be able to assign permanent card numbers to each item so that i can have something fixed to search for. I'd really like to see more sorting options in general. I'd love to be able to sort things by date, geographic location, etc. (similar to filemaker pro)

I'd also like to be able to customize my display. I'd like to be able to move things around, define categories, see thumbnail images of pictures saved, etc.

I understand the impulse to want to be able to quickly see what collections an item is in, but don't get too hung up on this. Adding an item to a collection doesn't really take up any space in the database, since it's really just a virtual connection. In that sense, it works more like iTunes than, say, your operating system folders and files.

Hold down the Option key (Mac) or Control key (Windows).

Click the rectangle/triangle icon at the right side of the column headings to see a drop-down list of fields you can sort by. Currently these are mostly limited to fields that can appear in all items, but we'll probably expand the list later. Date is one of the options.
  • Dan Stillman:

Thank you so much for letting me know about the option key. That is fantastic.

I'm mostly interested in being able to enter geographic locations so that i can see things move through space and time and I'd also like to my cards to be assigned permanent, unchangeable numbers.

"things"? Can you be more specific?

As for identifiers, the best, most forward-looking, way to do this in my view is to implement it alongside the forthcoming server functionality. So your "unchangeable numbers" become something like:

    http://zotero.org/grad/notes/1

That gives you a globally unique and stable ID, and one that can be used to access the resource in question from anywhere.

That's just my view though; I don't speak for the project.
