Update word document from 2.0 to 2.1 catastrophe

Platform Windows vista 32bit
Firefox 4.0
Zotero 2.1.1/WinWord plugin 3.1b1
MS Word 2007
Citation style: customized based on ieee

Issue: Updating document with 2.0 formatted zotero bibliography causes citation numbering to get scrambled after "Zotero Refresh". Citation numbers change to point to the _wrong_ bibliography entries.

The behavior is repeatable. Has been repeated on multiple documents. Has been repeated on two separate computers (Win7 x64/Word 2007).

The bibliography section and numbering remains the same after the refresh, but the
citation numbering changes. [1] is replaced with [2], [2] with [3] and so forth. The new numbering is incorrect - pointing at the wrong bibliography entries.

Before:
[1] = ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM {"sort":true,"citationItems":[{"uri":["http://zotero.org/groups/22269/items/G3QQT93J"]}]}
[2] = ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM {"sort":true,"citationItems":[{"uri":["http://zotero.org/groups/22269/items/3PAMKJXV"]}]}

After:
[2] = ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM {"citationID":"HW01e2C4","properties":{"unsorted":false},"citationItems":[{"uri":["http://zotero.org/groups/22269/items/3PAMKJXV"]}]}
[3] = ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM {"citationID":"qNXaodxn","properties":{"unsorted":false},"citationItems":[{"uri":["http://zotero.org/groups/22269/items/G677NS2B"]}]}

Before and after:
[1] W.A. Baumgartner, Heart and lung transplantation, Elsevier Health Sciences, 2002.
[2] T.P.M. Whelan and M.I. Hertz, “Allograft rejection after lung transplantation.” Clinics in chest medicine. 2005;26(4):599-612.

http://www.zotero.org/groups/22269/items/G3QQT93J -> points to Baumgartner
http://www.zotero.org/groups/22269/items/3PAMKJXV - > points to Whelan

I have (1) reinstalled both firefox add ons (2) checked the integrity of my database (2) rebuilt my index (2) run Word 2007 diagnostics. The problem does not change.

I have found similar problems with two other documents ( this is *every* document that I've looked at.)

My customized ieee style has made me suspicious. So I have tried this:

1. before updating the document to 2.1, first delete the existing bibliography
2. Change to standard ieee style.
3. Refresh.

This is successful!

BUT:

4. add in standard ieee bibliography.
5. refresh again.

The numbering is screwed up again!!

Any ideas?

    Wait for the next release (2.1.2, coming within the next day), and see if this behavior improves after installing it. The proof is in the pudding, but several issues with word processor integration have been addressed recently.
  • Thanks Frank:

    I looked at the changelog for 2.1.2 and saw this:

    Fixed citations appearing after a bibliography

    This is my problem! I tried moving my bibliography to the end of my document and presto: my problems were fixed. No problems with refreshing.

    I look forward to the new release.
  • Zotero 2.1.2 is now available. You can download it from http://zotero.org/ or choose "Check for Updates" in the Firefox add-on manager.
