Zotero does not sync

I have two computers, one Windows XP (at work, behind a restrictive firewall) and one Win7 64 bit. Both have Firefox 4 and Zotero 2.1.1 installed. However, the Windows 7 box does not sync with the Zotero DB—the green arrow just spins forever. The login and password are OK - i get a "wrong password" error when I change them, so the connection to the server is working. I resetted the DB of windows 7 box and tried to sync it, again with zero effect.

What can I do to restore syncing on my Win7 PC?
  • Don't use the reset options for troubleshooting.

Restart Firefox and try again, and post here when you do.
  • Restarting Firefox also resulted in no effect.
  • You had a successful download from the server an hour ago.

This is by my work computer, I suppose, IP address starting by 193. It is working fine, as I have mentioned earlier. I am controlling it now via Remote Desktop. The Win7 PC still cannot sync.

This one started with 83—and it's the same one that has been making repeated full downloads of your library.
  • A Debug ID for a sync attempt from your home computer may be helpful. About 5 minutes of logging may be sufficient. (Most of these download attempts have finished within a second (though there'd then be download time)).
  • A Report ID might also be helpful, in case some error is causing the sync arrow to spin perpetually.

Thank you. Is there a way to do a clean 'reinstall' of Zotero? I think it will fix the issue, as the DB is see from Zotero on Win7 box is still empty.

I will now provide the data you requested.

You can do a Restore from Zotero Server in the Sync pane of the Zotero prefs, but that's not meant for troubleshooting, and there's no particular reason that should work any differently. And if there's an actual problem we'd like to fix it.

Are you sure this isn't just a cosmetic issue? If you create a new item on the Win7 box, does it show up there? Does it sync to the other?

    DebugID D467526970
  • I have added a book called 'test' as the single member of the library on Win7 box. It does not seem to sync.
  • There are no Zotero errors in that error report, and that debug output doesn't appear to show a sync attempt. You need to restart Firefox, enable debug output, try to sync, wait 5 minutes, and then submit the debug output.

But first disable your other Firefox extensions. I see a successful download from 15 minutes ago.

I repeated the sequence twice. First, with extensions enabled (their set-up is very similiar between two computers) and then with all of them disabled. The DebugIDs are D460865929 with extensions and D668268719 without. The result is the same (nothing synced) in both cases. The Report errors... option is grayed out.
  • You're not receiving the response from the server. This is quite likely an issue with a proxy, firewall, or some security software. But pretty much all we can tell you is that the server is sending a (large) response and your browser isn't receiving it.
  • I created an empty Firefox profile, installed Zotero there and synced successfully. It seems that some Zotero options in the 'old' profile are causing the error. So, is there any way to clear ALL Zotero-related settings from the profile?
  • Never mind. I moved my passwords, bookmarks and 52 open tabs to the new profile, and Zotero seems to work fine. The profile itself dates to Firefox 1 and I understand that it can have some strange settings hidden somewhere. I will reinstall the extensions I use and report if any of them will cause Zotero to stop syncing again.
  • Great. Glad to hear it's working.
