Freeze

Hi there,

I've looked around the forums and couldn't find a topic that related to my problem or perhaps I missed it - apologies if this has already been addressed.

I am turning my dissertation into my committee in three days, and I received the notice about updating the plug-in and updating the new 2.0 version. I went through the download process and I also updated the newest version of Firefox so that it was compatible. I very much regret doing so.

Now, when I go to insert a citation, two things happens: 1) I keep getting the same notice about how three of my citations are not recognized and have been deleted from the bibliography, and 2) I am able to select the citation but it never gets added to the text; instead, I get a just the {Citation} box. I wait for five or ten minutes - and nothing happens.

Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated, or, if this has been answered, I'd appreciate being pointed to the appropriate forum.

Many thanks,

Amanda
  • If you are in the final stage of preparation and you have a copy of your thesis document that has not been upgraded to 2.1.1, you should move back to the 2.0 version. There are two steps involved: downgrading the Zotero software by reinstalling the 2.0 extension; and downgrading the database. The two steps can be carried out in either order (Zotero will not touch the database when there is a version mismatch). Be sure to make separate copies of your thesis and of the zotero.sqlite file when performing the downgrade, as insurance.

Instructions for downgrading the database are here:

    http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data?s=export#restoring_from_the_last_upgrade_backup

The 2.0 client is available here:

    http://www.zotero.org/download/zotero-2.0.9.xpi
  • Thanks.

I downgraded both Firefox and Zotero, but now, I can't open up Zotero because it says it isn't compatible. The message I get is "This version of Zotero is older than the version last used with your database. Please upgrade to the latest version from zotero.org."

I know that I am supposed to replace “zotero.sqlite” in myZotero data directory with “zotero.sqlite.[highest-number].bak”, but I am not sure how to do this because I can't open Zotero.

Apologies for being relatively computer illiterate.

  • Oops - and I meant to say that I also can't open up Firefox now - because I get the message, "This version of Zotero WinWord Integration requires Zotero 2.1a1.SVN or later to run. Please download the latest version of Zotero from zotero.org." So, now, I can't open Zotero or Firefox.

    Thanks for you assistance.
  • Amanda,

No worries, you're almost there. Take a look at this page; it explains how to find the Zotero data directory, where you will find the zotero.sqlite file described under the first link I posted above.

    http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#locating_your_zotero_library

For safety, you should take a copy of the existing zotero.sqlite file somewhere before overwriting it, just in case. But when you copy the highest-numbered backup into place, Zotero should come up happily.
  • (Note that you don't need to run Firefox or Zotero to copy the old zotero.sqlite into place -- in fact, Firefox should be completely shut down when you do that operation.)
  • Hi again,

    Thanks for your patience.

I am confused about how & where to copy the old back up file. The link says, or the way I am interpreting it, seems to imply that I do need Zotero or Firefox to make the replacement.

I made a copy of all of the Zotero files and they are sitting on my desktop. But, I don't understand how to replace the sqlite with the spqlite backup. It is on my hard drive?

Apologies if I am being super dense.

    Thanks again.

The quickest and most reliable way to find your Zotero data directory is through the “Show Data Directory” button in the Advanced tab of your Zotero Preferences window.

By default, Zotero data is stored within your Firefox profile in these OS-dependent directories (on most systems you will have to select to “Show Hidden Files and Folders” to be able to navigate to the Firefox Profile):

    On Mac OS X:
    /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<randomstring>/zotero
    On Windows Vista and 7:
    C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<randomstring>\zotero
    On Windows 2000 and XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<randomstring>\zotero
    On most Linux distributions:
    ~/.mozilla/firefox/<randomstring>/zotero
A search for 'zotero.sqlite' can also help you locate the Zotero data directory.

If you have selected a custom data directory in the Advanced pane of the Zotero prefs, your data will be stored elsewhere. The “Show Data Directory” button will always reveal the data directory currently in use.

Using Zotero is just the easiest way to find the data folder. The alternative is to find your Zotero folder by following the file-paths above - note that you will have to have the option to "show hidden files and folders" enabled.

Once you have that folder, you rename the zotero.sqlite.[num].bak (where [num] is the largest number if ther are several such files.) from the copy of your Zotero files on the Desktop to zotero.sqlite and use it to replace the zotero.sqlite in your Zotero data folder in your Firefox profile.

I'm not sure whether Amanda means the same thing we do by "all of the Zotero files". (If she hasn't yet reached the Zotero data folder, she can't have made a copy of the database.)

But (to Amanda) don't worry, it's better to go slow and ask for advice when you get stumped than to do something rash; it can save time and stress all around. Try navigating down from "My Computer" (assuming you're on Windows), taking heed of adamsmith's advice about the "show hidden files and folders" setting, which becomes necessary about two or three folders down.
  • Hi again,

So, I used the paths and found the folders - thanks.

I renamed the back up file - as the "zero.sqlite" file. I tried then re-opened Firefox and am having the same issue - I can't open Firefox or Zotero and the explanations are the same as above.

So, what step did I miss?

    Thanks so much.
  • I take it back - I am now able to open up Zotero - but I still have the same problem - it includes the term [citation] not the actual reference.

I am wondering if I should call it a lost cause and copy and past my document into a new word document.
  • So going through the list: (1) You have stopped and restarted Firefox, and can call up Zotero, and confirm via gear menu -> About Zotero that you have the 2.0 version running; (2) You have also installed the plugin for Zotero 2.0 from the 2.0 plugins page.

    Further questions are:

    (a) Are you using a copy of the document that was not upgraded for use with Zotero 2.1?

    (b) In the non-upgraded (2.0) version of the document, are you still getting the warnings about the three citations that are not recognized?

    (c) You are getting the {citation} marker in the 2.0 version of the document (not the 2.1 version where the problem originally showed up)?
  • Hi there,

    A) I am using the same document that I used before the upgrade was offered. Then, I uploaded the new version - tried to use the same document and it hasn't worked since - either the older or newer version.

    B) I am no longer getting the warnings about the three citations that are not recognized - so that is at least good news!

    C) Yes.

    Thanks.
    AJ
  • let me rephrase A: After the upgrade - did you ever save that document? If so, that would be a problem...
  • Yes - I am sure I did. I didn't realize at the time that there was a problem.

And, thank you for your help.
  • and you don't have a copy from before that? No Time Machine or some other back-up?
  • I have an older copy but I've made significant changes to the document since then.

    Best, AJ
