Word Add-in Insert Citation Error

I installed the latest updates to zotero and the word plug in a couple days ago. I am now not able to insert a citation using the word plug-in. Previously, I could click on the insert citation option (under add-ins/zotero insert citation) and the author, date would be automatically inserted.

The error message I receive says:

Your document must be permanently upgraded in order to work with Zotero 2.1 or later. It is recommended that you make a backup before proceeding. Are you sure you want to continue?
  • and what happens then? Do you click "yes" or "OK" or whatever it wants you to press? And then?
  • When I click ok, I get the following message:

    This item no longer exists in your Zotero database. Do you want to select a substitute item? Clicking "No" will delete the field codes for citations containing this item, preserving the citation text but deleting it from your bibliography." Yes No Cancel

    When I clicked Yes, a different citation was highlighted (not the citation I was originally trying to insert, but another citation I had inserted previously using the zotero plugin).
  • To clarify, after I click Ok (with the first prompt), another citation (different author) is highlighted within my word document.

    The next pop-up (This item no longer...) then appears. I'm not sure what is meant by the prompt-"Do you want to select a substitute item"...
  • those messages come up when, for some reason, the items you cite are no longer found in your Zotero library.
    Did you do anything that could have caused that? Restore from a backup? Are you co-authoring the paper? Do you do anything else unusual with your database - like sharing or syncing it through a network drive, dropbox or some other non-Zotero sync?
  • I haven't made any changes to the item it's referencing and the item is still showing up in my library...

    I use dropbox, but only to save copies of my articles (I have pdf copies of the articles in zotero and in dropbox)-otherwise, I don't sync any info, no sharing...

    Could it have to do with the updates? I've only received the message today. I didn't use the add-in feature yesterday.

  • Have you tried re-selecting the item? (Click "Yes" in the dialog.)
