Metadata and associated pdfs not downloading properly

I'm new to zotero; yesterday started playing with it.
I tried adding research papers to my collection but this is not working.
First tried adding by clicking to add from web page. An entry was added but not formatted properly - ie authors etc not recognised as such.
I could add properly formatted material by specifying the doi. But in no case did the associated pdf load.

    pdfs don't download with DOI (the data comes from the CrossRef database, which doesn't have pdfs). If you just create an item from a webpage by clicking on the "Create New Item" button in Zotero, you never get any metadata
    You'll get pdfs (and metadata) when you download articles from certain supported databases (such as JSTOR) using the icon in the URL bar, as demonstrated in the intro video and instructions.
