Hello Worlding
I'm working on a project at NC State University, and it looks like we'd like to make a Zotero extension to get some things rolling without hacking Zotero directly.
Unfortunately, the Hello World plugin (http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/sample_plugin) isn't happy.
Its page hasn't been updated since 2008 and the code really hasn't since 2007, so I guess that's not too surprising.
Docs on the Zotero API aren't much more encouraging.
Note: The code examples below are out of date. Currently, the code itself is the best resource for understanding the API. In particular, search for “new Zotero.Item” and “Zotero.Items.get()” to learn how to create and update items, respectively.
What's the recommended method to start hacking that doesn't necessarily throw one to the cybernetic-only side of the cyborgian wolves? (aka, "Is there a tutorial in English, where code != English?")
Or, perhaps, there's a fairly close to "Hello, world" level plugin whose code works now that might be worth using as a template?
TIA. I'm hoping that, at the very least, posting will cause enough blood to go to my head to Google up exactly what I'm looking for minutes after hitting "Start your discussion."

Add-on helloworld@zotero.org is incompatible with Firefox 3.6.13, Toolkit 1.9.2.13. Remote compatibility check did not resolve this.
