Zotero won't load

Went through the first 5 or 6 pages of this forum & haven't found this exact problem.

I'm using version 2.1b7 with Firefox 3.6.13. Other add ons: Clipmarks, coolpreviews, java console, lastpast, mcafee site advisor, MS .net framework asst 0.0.0?, peartrees, read it later, speed dial, and split browser.

Since upgrading to Beta, zotero won't open at all, either from status bar, tools, or ctl/alt/z or whatever. I can go to tools/add-ons and bring up Zotero. And I have found the file that has all my collections under Firefox.

I thought of uninstalling the Beta and going back to the earlier version but will that delete all my saved files?

Thanks.
  • Thanks. Zotero worked after I disabled split browser; a pain since I liked it. I'll try Tile Tabs.
  • I'm using 2.0.9 and Firefox 3.6.14 (though this has been a problem for a while). I've removed all add-ons except Gears, Java Console, and Microsoft NET Framework. I've removed and reinstalled both Firefox and Zotero and Zotero still won't open/load. I can see it in the list of Add-ons, but it's not in the status tray and the "hot keys" won't open it. I've given up on Zotero, but want to give it another chance. But,if it won't work, what's the point!
  • Thank you, Simon. Tried it, but no dice. Still doesn't show up, won't start with the hot key combo, and doesn't appear in the tools menu.
  • jbnann, as a sophisticated tech-type guy (translation: disaster waiting to happen), I got zotero working simply by getting rid of split browser. I did install tile tabs but haven't used it very much. Firefox has a new beta 4; I'm not going to download it because I hate it when my computer explodes. Good luck.
  • jbnann - if you don't see Zotero in the tools menu, it's most likely not installed properly.

Have you tried the steps under Corrupt Extension Files
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unable%20to%20install%20add-ons#Corrupt_extension_files
    as directed by Simon's link?

    If that didn't help:
What do you see in the add-on list? Can you click on the preference button for Zotero in the add-on window?

Do you observe anything out of the ordinary during installation? It's probably worth trying to un-install, empty cache, re-download and re-install one more time.
  • Thank you, but I've tried the steps under Corrupt Extension Files as Simon suggested and I can see Zotero in the Add-Ons list and I can play around with the Zotero options. I just un-installed Zotero, emptied the Firefox cache, and re-installed Zotero.

Still no dice. Can't make it open, can't see it in the Tools menu, can see it in the Add-Ons screen and can look at the options in that screen. It's gotta be something stupid, but I stripped everything off Firefox to get rid on potential conflicts, have un-installed and re-downloaded and installed Firefox and have done the same with Zotero.

I really appreciate your help and suggestions, but I'm stumped and getting frustrated.
  • People pretty much never have this problem after following all the steps on the No Status Bar Icon page, but if you really have you can try creating a new Firefox profile directory and installing Zotero into it.

It could also be something else installed on your system, though that's much less likely.
  • Thank you Dan! I'd done everything in the No Status Icon Page, but when I created a new firefox profile directory and installed Zotero into it, it worked!

    Thank you!
