citation preview

Hi

I'm using zotero version 2.0.9, Mac OSX v10.6.5 & Microsoft Word Mac 2008 v 12.2.6 (100708) latest update 12.2.6

I've been using Zotero for a while but have only discovered that it has a citation preview functionality (like Endnote). However, when I click 'show editor' after selecting 'add citation', the only text which comes up as the citation preview is '1\nosupersub ', regardless of which reference I select.

Can you pls advise? Big thx.
  • which citation style?
have you / can you try this with different citation styles?
  • The error I've cited is with the American Medical Association style.

Seems to work with Chicago Manual of Style and a couple of those with only date and author citation (which doesn't meet my needs).

With the following ones I get a blank citation with only the number of the citation:
    - harvard
    - vancouver
    - national library of medicine
    - modern humanities research association
  • I can't replicate Harvard or MHRA and those don't make sense to me (I'd suspect you did something wrong there), but I can replicate that for AMA and NLM. The reason is that for Zotero the number is the whole citation. For numerical styles, the actual data (i.e. authors, title etc.) are part of the bibliography, which isn't previewed.

The \nosupersub is just a tag for formatting becaus e AMA uses superscript numbers. I think this would be nice to improve, but I don't see that happening in the near future.
  • Thanks. So basically I won't get to preview the citation for all numerical styles? Is that always going to be the case?

Thx by the way. You've been a great help!
  • I'm not going to predict "always", but it's not going to change in the foreseeable future, no. It's also tricky to change, because you're not just getting a preview, you can also edit the citation and it seems tricky put the bibliography entry there for editing - there might be a solution, but not an easy one.
Anyway, think what would be more important is the ability to actually link the in-text numerical citation to the bibliography entry (i.e. you click on the number, you go the the bibliography), which also doesn't yet exist.
  • I think the editor should be fixed in the Zotero 2.1 beta.
  • but by "fixed" you only mean that it doesn't show the /nosupersub anymore, right? That I can confirm for the current beta.
  • Right, that's what I mean. There's also an issue with numeric styles and the "Edit Bibliography" feature in 2.0.9 that we have fixed for 2.1, although it's still not entirely ideal since editing a numeric style will fix the number in place for subsequent updates, which will cause problems if references are added later.
