Disappearing Files/Syncing a back up

Today the vast majority of my files disappeared. At first I thought it was the common problem described (http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data) but now I'm not sure. All of my folders remained intact as did everything in my trash bin. Everything else seems to have gotten a clean wipe. Unfortunately I had closed firefox before I realized the problem so saving a copy of the file wasn't an option. I'm still not sure what caused the problem. I checked the firefox profile but only one appeared so I can't see how it would have made any kind of mix up there. All my bookmarks are also fine. I also tried using the "show data" feature and the correct folder showed up. I'm at a loss as to what the problem would be. Hopefully I've just overlooked something simple.

As irritating as that was I had a back up from a few days ago. I followed the instructions for recovering data and successfully loaded it. As soon as it synced, however, my recovered files were replaced with the corrupted version of the file (all files missing except folder and trash). Is there any way to tell zotero to use this older data (my back up) instead of the newer but broken data it seems to prefer? I'd like to be able to use the sync feature in the future but as of right now the only way to make anything work is to turn it off completely.
  • Items don't just disappear. It's far more likely that it's just a UI issue. Disable your other Firefox extensions and restart Firefox.
  • Thanks for the quick response. I've disabled everything except zotero and restarted without any change. The only extensions I'm running are greasemoney 0.9.1, python 2.6.2, zotero 2.0.9, and zotero macword integration 3.0b7.
  • Are you using a non-default theme?

Also provide a Report ID after reproducing the problem.
  • I'm using the default 3.6.13 theme.

I did change the data directory location of zotero when I first installed it. I thought at first that might be a problem but I've gone into preferences and had look at both locations. No luck there sadly.
  • While I'd encourage you to work with Dan to figure out the underlying problem

In the Sync Tab of the Zotero preferences, go to the "Reset" tab, there, select Restore to Zotero Server and click the Reset button on the bottom.
  • Don't use Restore to Server. Your server data is fine.
  • I thought perhaps my automatic backup system interfered with zotero. It backs up the entire zotero folder and may have gone off while I was syncing or something like that. I tried running the program (Mozy) again and manually synced multiple times with some fake files. I couldn't recreate any kind of disruption.

I also thought I might have accidently turned off grease monkey mid sync as it is located next to the zotero icon. I turned that on and off multiple times during the sync without any loss of data.
