Image notes are lost !

I don't know after what, but my images (taken as note on the right hand side when a pdf file is viewed) are gone. There is a broken link symbol for images instead. Although i loaded my back-up, it's the same. What's wrong with images notes for pdf files? How can I i make them visible again?

A solution/workaround is at the bottom here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/tips_and_tricks

Your old images are, unfortunately, irretrievably lost.
  • The workaround doesn't work correctly in Zotero 2.09 and in Zotero 2.1b, do to a bug that appeared when the rich text editor integration was reworked. Hopefully (ahem...) this can be fixed before Zotero 2.1 final, since it breaks image embedding (unless the person thinks to fix the image location manually).
  • My my, am I the only one who has lost a ton of "clipped" pdf tables and other quotations I've pasted into notes? I realize that this feature was never really supported, but a feature that follows common use practices and that *apparently* works just fine until everything's lost seems like an odd place to draw a line in the sand and point users to the far reaches of the documentation. Anyway, users can't even add images this way anymore so no more harm will be done, but still, ouch.
  • The problem here was that until this first came up, no one - or at least no dev - was even aware it apparently worked. And then it wasn't trivial to change, because a) Zotero uses 3rd party software for the notes and b) "breaking" the possibility to paste from the clipboard would also have broken formerly functioning ways to include images.
So once you become aware of a features that works for some people but misleads some others with no easy solution in sight - what do you do?

Right now, as you say, at least that part has (just as inadvertently as it was created) been solved.
  • Did the images pasted into notes ever stick around? I know that they wouldn't have synced, but I thought that they were linked to temporary files that are prone to disappearing on, say, system restart.

With some effort, perhaps we can intercept incoming pasted images and save them as item attachments to insert them safely. But that will take some real effort by a person with meaningful knowledge of TinyMCE, our text editor.

Inserting/dragging and dropping images into notes should be a priority fix for 2.1.
  • no, they never did - that was the problem: People c&pasted the images into the notes, they appeared and they (reasonably) assumed that they were going to stay there - only to find that they had disappeared when they checked 2 weeks later
(to then be told by snotty power users (=me) that they should have known that all along, had they only read page 57, par. 3 of the online documentation ;-))
  • notes lost. NOT. pleased.
  • notes or images in notes?
  • Lost images inserted into notes associated with different sources/books. The images were scanned PDFs of handwritten notes. I created the notes about a year ago. Recently wanted to review notes from a particular book; instead of the PDF scan, the zotero note showed a tiny graphic of a broken page. I checked other notes where I had inserted images of handwritten notes. All images gone, replaced with the broken page graphic.
  • If this was a year ago I'm surprised you were even able to paste images into notes - do you remember what exactly you did?
Also, check the html of one note (there is an HTML button at the top right) and post it here.
Unfortunately, as per above, chances are they're lost.
  • This was working in the stand alone version of Zotero on my laptop. It was summer 2012 because I was preparing for comprehensive exams at the time. In each instance, I recall creating a note for a book. Within the note, there was a menu icon to insert an image into the note. Last week I downloaded and installed a new version of Zotero and I see that insert image icon is no longer visible in a note. It is still accessible in a note, though, if I right click in the note. Anyway, that's how I added images of handwritten notes to quite a few of the sources I have filed in my Zotero library. I backed up my library several times last summer. I may check to see if the images saved in the the back up. At any rate, I'm chalking this up to Zotero being convenient as bibliographic file manager, but not as a place to capture notes -- not even in the stand alone version because it seems likely that files can be altered when I install an update. Thanks for the follow up.
  • Here is the html from one of my notes where the images are gone.

  • your database isn't affected by version upgrades.
This problem is very specific to images in notes - text notes have never been affected.
Though what you're seeing is still odd - there should be some type of link to the original file - that's on the same computer?
