Link to website problems

I have Zotero 1.0.9.xpi on a Macbook OSX 10.6.6

At one time with earlier Zotero versions when I saved an article or website in zotero it saved the url address and the URL address would show up when you clicked on the saved Zotero link.

Now when I save a website I get something like this: zotero://attachment/1040/
and it is just a dead end to the saved article.
The url link is noted in the Info section but you cannot click on it to get to
the exact web page. You would have to highlight it and paste it onto the
Firefox web address to actually get to the website.

Is this feature no longer available on Zotero - to save the article and its website address and when you click on the saved article in Zotero it actually takes you to the website page and not just present it as a Zotero attachment.

thank you very much

Edit: I assume you have 2.0.9, and not 1.0.9, right?

if you select the actual attachment (rather than the item), you'll have a clickable link to the website in the right-hand panel.
There might also be a shortcut, but if there is, I forgot.
  • You need to click on the text "URL" next to the address in the info pane.
  • Thanks for assistance and suggestions.
First - Clicking on text URL in info pane does not send me to the website -
it only highlights the URl - no further action
There was a time when URL was not in the info pane but right there with the
saved article itself - I liked that better. I don't understand how making a
saved website a Zotero attachment instead of a URL was an improvement.

Second - I apparently do have 1.0.9 and have tried repeatedly to update to 2.0.9 but when restarting Firefox Zotero reverts to 1.0.9 version. I cannot even find a 2.0.9 in my Mac OSX downloads. Something is amiss.
Even my 1.0.9 version is just listed as a document not a dmg.
    But something is working.

I am afraid of deleting the program and starting over since all my zotero files will
    be lost I assume.
  • 1.0.9 is _really_ old - we can't support that anymore.

Could you describe in more detail what is happening when you try to install the 2.0.9 version?
Also, Zotero won't delete your data when you uninstall it, but to be safe you can make a back-up of your library before
    http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data
  • Correction.
When I checked that little cogwheel in Zotero it does say I have version 2.0.9
I just can't find Zotero anywhere in my Mac OSX HD.
Don't know where Zotero hides its downloads.

I still wish I had a clickable URL link to the websites I save instead of just
a Zotero attachment. I see the URL in the info notes but it doesn't function.
  • You would see Zotero in your Firefox --> Tools --> Add-ons

Again, there are two ways to get to the URL
    1. Scroll down to the URL in the Info panel and then click on the letter "URL" - do not click on the actual address, but to the bold "URL" next to it - when you hover over those letters Zotero says "go to this item online"

    2. Again, you also get a clickable link on the right by selecting the attachment.

Finally, you can turn off snapshots by unselecting the option "attach snapshots when..." in the general tab of the Zotero preferences. You will then go directly to the page when double-clicking on the item. The reason that's not the default is that most academics prefer to have the sources they cite archived and note dependent on some link remaining active.
  • Okay thanks for the advice on clicking just on the URL lettering.
    I didn't know that - that works.

I don't understand what you mean by your step #2 ( by selecting what attachment? where ? )

But thanks again - am just glad to be able to get to the URL site.

    2. If you expand the item in Zotero in the middle panel (click on the plus next to it or type +) then, still in the middle panel, select - i.e. click once on - the attachment to the item (which will have a little camera as part of its icon), you'll see a bunch of info in the right panel, including a clickable link to the website in red.
  • Voila Hey you really know what you're talking about. Lol

thank you very much for patiently explaining all the steps

    much appreciated
