textual citation style Harvard

The natbib package in latex allows for citation in textual style using the command '\citet{}' to produce:

text author1, yyyy1

Is it possible to be able to have different citation commands in zotero? For example with latex and natbib, '\citep{}' produces

(author1, yyyy)

and '\citet{}' produces

author1, yyyy

This useful if a document text needs citation various subtle changes depending on the context of the surrounding text.
  • The closest there is is the suppress author command in the plugin - search the forum for some lengthy discussions on that vs. different forms of citation - I don't think there is a great inclination to change this.
  • The suppress author command does not solve this requirement. Also, if the field is manually edited to remove the parenthethes, after reload/refresh of the document the zotero fields show the parenthethes to be re-inserted. This means that the citation style cannot be used in the correct context with the text. A pity! Any ideas how to implement please?
  • well, you can use the "show editor" field in the plugin - changes there won't be erased on refresh, but the citation won't refresh in any other way (e.g. change of citation style, change of database etc.) anymore either.
Do you have an example where this is used? I have seen "Smith (2009) says..." a lot, but don't recall ever seeing "Smith, 2009, says..."
  • The need to refresh is not strong so this seems a good idea. Will changes in the editor dialogue window mode affect the bibliography database?

An example where this is used is a sentence which may be in parentheses and textual citation avoids extra parentheses being shown. Also a sentence may wish to refer to a series of sources where it is listed in-text by semi-colon:

The following studies were used to make the approximation: author1, yyyy1; author2, yyyy3; author3, yyyy4.
  • Changing a citation with show editor does not affect whether or how an item shows up in the bibliography (which I take it is your question - obviously it doesn't change the database itself - nothing you can do with the plugin does) so you should be fine.
