Bug report: references not going into collection
I use the collection feature of the library to separate papers on the topic of previous research from the topic of my current postdoc. I am grateful for the feature that, as the Zotero site says,
"If you are currently working in a specific collection (that is, a collection is highlighted in the left column rather than “My Library”), the references will be copied to that location as well as your overall library."
However, this is not working currently. When I import a new reference from NCBI by clicking the book icon in the Firefox location bar, the reference is added to my library but not the collection I am working in / have highlighted. I have been manually dragging new references from my library list to the appropriate collection folder, hoping that this will be fixed. It's a small bother, but I can't find any settings that I might have changed, and the default function is what I want, so I don't know why it just stopped working one day unless it's my current version. I'm using Zotero 2.0.9 in Firefox 3.6.13 on a Mac OS 10.6.5.

Has this ever worked for you? What part of NCBI were you in when you tried to download something? Are you directly going to the NLM site or are you accessing the database through a site like OVID or EBSCO?
About 6 weeks ago the PubMed site began providing books and reports when responding to a query. I had trouble downloading several of these -- different problems with different records. (Sometimes there was no problem at all.) For some reports, the rectangular Zotero box appeared but it was empty and nothing downloaded. For others I got a garbled download and Zotero interpreted is as an item-type "book section".
I examined the XML of each pubmed record and the tags don't seem to be consistent and the formatting of the contents of the tags is not consistent. In short, the data being provided by PubMed has been a mess for all non-journal records.
In the past 48 hours, NLM has again changed both the search functions for Journals and Books (not for journal ARTICLES). The search system is really buggy. In an advanced search you can search for a journal by ISSN and receive a message that the journal isn't in the database but you can search for the same journal by abbreviation and find it with the ISSN listed on the screen. However, when I view the data in MEDLINE or XML format the record is tagged as "BookDocument" and there is no ISSN tag and nothing in the ISBN field.
There have been major changes to the PubMed interface occurring for the past several months. Sometimes these cosmetic changes are accompanied by operational and structural changes behind the scenes.
I receive data from NCBI directly for my project and don't often use Zotero for grabbing journal data. My own system has also had problems. The greatest problem is that we were not informed before these changes in data content and structure have been made.
All day long I use Zotero and seldom have problems. Sometimes we use other bibliographic management programs if Zotero hasn't downloaded something I need right away. Almost every time we try to access a document's metadata with another program it fails too. This has been the case with my own recent NCBI problems.
As for the NCBI format issues-- if they settle on a new format for some new item types, we'll add support to the translator. Let me know if and when the format settles down. I understand journal articles are still fine?
...OK, so I imported a reference just now in order to generate a debug_output, and the reference went into the collection I wanted, but I swear this is the first time it has worked in months. But it seems to be working reproducibly (I tried it twice), so I'm just glad it's "fixed" for now. :-)
