Zotero word plug-in/add-on will not open Zotero in word

This is what comes up when i try to use Zotero in Word:

Zotero 2.1b1 requires Zotero WinWord Integration 3.1a0 or later. Please download the latest version of Zotero WinWord Integration from zotero.org.

What should I do? I tried saving word zotero to my desktop then opening it and it still didn't work. I am feeling really suck and frustrated as I have tried to install the add-on multiple times.

Thanks!
  • From the 2.1 Beta page:
Zotero 2.1 requires new word processor plugins for Word and OpenOffice compatibility.
Are you positive you want to be running the beta version?
  • What version should I be running then?

I have windows 7 and with the latest version of word
  • Zotero 2.0.8 is the latest stable version.
  • So you need to either install the 2.1-compatible word processor plugins from that page or revert to 2.0.8. There are instructions on that page for reverting to 2.0, but as it says, you'd be on your own, since you opted to install the beta version.

I'm still puzzled by this. I'm running Zotero 2.1b2.r6998 (on Windows 7.0 and WinWord 2010), with the latest WinWord integration plugin (from the zotero website - https://www.zotero.org/svn/integration/xpcom/WinWord/tags/3.1a1/), but I still get this error message. Can anybody explain why this is the case?
  • I'm unclear as to why you're linking to SVN. What versions do you actually have installed?
  • I was just looking for the latest zotero.dot file on the zotero website - and that's the one I found. The reason I looked for that, was that updating from within the Firefox add-on didn't seem to update the zotero.dot file in my Word Startup folder.
  • What version of Zotero WinWord Integration appears in Tools->Add-ons->Extensions? The version of Zotero.dot is irrelevant, and reinstalling it will not fix this error. Make sure you are running the latest plug-in from the beta page.
  • I just succesfully upgraded to zotero 2.1 and dowloaded the recommended plugin for microsoft word, my version is office professional 2003 runing in win2k.
I get the following error message when trying to insert a reference in a word document :
"Zotero 2.1b2 requires Zotero OpenOffice Integration 3.1a0 or later. Please download the latest version of Zotero OpenOffice Integration from zotero.org."
However, installed version of the plugin is shown as 3.1a2 in firefox add-ons.
  • It really says Open Office? I sure hope that's just because they haven't adjusted the error message.
These steps aren't for the beta, but I'd still run through them:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#incompatible_plugin
  • It really does: "Zotero 2.1b2 requires Zotero OpenOffice Integration 3.1a0 or later. Please download the latest version of Zotero OpenOffice Integration from zotero.org."
This is a copy and paste after: closing word, uninstalling the plugin, closing firefox, removing zotero.dot, reopening firefox and reinstalling the plugin.
Initially zotero toolbar did not show in word then I followed the instructions and reinstalled again but ...... same error message when trying to insert a reference.
  • It can only say Zotero OpenOffice Integration if Zotero OpenOffice Integration is actually installed, since it retrieves the name from the extension itself. Sounds like you need to either remove or update Zotero OpenOffice Integration.
  • I just upgraded also the plugin for openoffice.
Then tried again to introduce in microsoft word a reference. This time it tried to update the document and then reported the following error: "Component returned failure code: 0x80004001(NS_ERROR_NOT_IMPLEMENTED)[zoteroIntegrationDocument.cursorInField] "
  • Does it work in a new document? Are you trying to edit a document that you previously created with OpenOffice?
  • It does. Yes, document was created in openoffice and saved in word format. Reopened in OO plugin worked. Saved document with the bookmarks options in doc format but problem did not go away. Copying and pasting of the whole document to a new doc document did the trick. In the new document the plugin is working.
  • So to make sure - this is solved, then right? Everything is working for you now?
  • It is working now in a new word document. The original problem seems related to the conversion of an openoffice document to the word doc format followed by the upgrade to the new plugin.
  • The same thing happened to me. Saved Open Office file as Word document and, after installing Microsoft Word 2010 (there were more people having the same problem with Zotero WinWord Integration 3.0b1 and Word 2010...so at least I would be on the same page...) and it would report the same error as Lampasona's "Component returned failure code: 0x80004001(NS_ERROR_NOT_IMPLEMENTED [zoteroIntegrationDocument.cursorInField] ". I cut an paste the contents on a new doc (Word 2010), saved with a different name (just in case) et...voilĂ ! Worked.
I probably did many many unnecessary things but I am in a panic-sort-of situation since I have to sumbit a paper before the 31 of this month, so thank you thank you thank you for sharing your problem...saved me! ;)
