JavaScript Error: "XML tag name mismatch (expected parent)"]

Hello All,

I just started to use Zotero and I gave up on Endnote. I am still learning how to use it. The problem is whenever I try to add a new citation or do any activity a windows pops up with the following message: "JavaScript Error: "XML tag name mismatch (expected parent)"].
I do not have a clue about what that means and now I cannot get anything done and I am kind of stuck. Please, any kind of information on how to fix it will be more than welcome.

Thanks
  • Is it a sync error? Does it happen when you click the sync icon?
  • Hi Dan,

Actually the problem happens when I try to add a citation in Word document. It does not happen when I press the sync icon. I realized that I forgot to mention that I am running Mac OS X 10.6 and the Word for Mac 2011. The problem somehow it is related to that specific document, because when I open a different file or a new document it does not happen. I uninstalled Zotero and the plug-ins and reinstalled them again, but the problem persisted with that file. The only thing that worked so far was when I selected the entire text, copy and paste it in a new document. For some reason that fixed the problem. Changing the file name does not help it. Although I found a way to get over it, I do not want that happening again, because I am writing my PhD thesis and it is a enormous file that could be easily messed up. If you have any idea of what could be causing that problem let me know.

    Thanks

somehow you corrupted a field in your document. Hard to say how exactly - it's very rare, and can usually (as in your case) be fixed following one of the steps here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#debugging_broken_documents

You are using fields, not bookmarks right?
  • Thank you Adamsmith,

I check it out and most of it makes sense.
What kind of fields do you mean? Field code? I am sorry I am really new to the Zotero world and I started playing with it today, so I do not know a lot of things.
I forgot to mention previously that I had imported an output style from Endnote styles when the problem happened...but it was working fine and all of sudden I started to receive that message and could not do anything else (with Zotero) in Word application that I would receive the same message. Do you think the Endnote style might have messed up with it?

I appreciate a lot your help!!
  • if you check "Set Document Preferences" in the Zotero Plugin in Word - do you have "Fields" or "Bookmarks" selected.
Not sure about the Endnote style - I find the sketchy, so I'm inclined to say yes, but I don't actually know the code behind it.
  • Yeah I am using Fields.
