Annotations not showing

When I open the articles I saved to Zotero under "My Library" I can see the annotations. I created a group and have access to a group library. Then I moved my articles to the group library. When I open my articles in the group library, I do not see the annotations I made (that are originally there and saved and can be seen when looking at the articles under "My Library" folder.)

Thanks.

  • In Zotero Preferences ---> General
towards the bottom, make sure that "child notes" is checked under the "Groups" settings.
  • Before I read this response, I had already gone to my group libraries and re- annotated all my documents. But I looked in preferences and my "child notes" is checked. Will my re-annotations be saved when anyone goes to look at articles in my file in Group Libraries?

For future reference, if the "child notes" box is checked, when I click on an article in the Group Libraries under my file I should see the annotations? And if I don't see the annotations, what could be the problem?

    Thank you!

  • oh sorry, I didn't understand what you meant by annotations.
You mean annotated snapshots, right? Those don't sync at all. Not to other computers, not to groups. sorry.
  • Is an annotated snapshot, a view of the article with any words that have been highlighted and/or any sentences or places that have been annotated?
  • pretty much, yes.
A snapshot is an image of a webpage. Zotero has an annotation function for those but those annotations don't sync. Most people store most of their articles in pdf files. These can be annotated with free software such as foxit or pdfxchange or, of course, adobe acrobat professional. Those annotations do sync.
  • What do you mean most people store as pdfs? They make annotations on the pdf, make that pdf available on the web, and then... those sync somehow?
  • Most Zotero users download a PDF of an academic article from the publisher's website & store it within Zotero. Some then annotate those PDFs with third-party software. If they use Zotero to sync attachments (through WebDAV or Zotero storage), any changes to the PDFs stored in their Zotero data directory would also be synced.
  • examples for such third party software include Mac Preview, Pdf-Xchange, Acrobat Professional, and Foxit.
All of these except Acrobat have free of charge versions that include the annotate feature.
If you're on Linux, many people find Pdf-Xchange run through wine the best current solution.
  • Hello,

I had the same trouble as LovingLyf3. I snapshot the papers in html and make annotations and highlights on them. From this forum I understand that I cannot sync these annotations and highlight. However I am pretty sure I could do this from my laptop to my computer in my former lab. I do really need to see all my annotations and highlights in my new lab´s computer. Why I cannot sync this now?
  • You're remembering it wrong. This was never possible in Zotero.
  • So... there´s no way to import annotations and highlights made in html snapshot?
  • I don't think so - I'd guess it would work if you move the entire Zotero folder around, as if restoring from a back-up, but that seems hardly a feasible solution.
  • I see... I don´t think this is a feasible solution either.
    Thank you any way.
