Snapshots Dissappear

I am having problems using the program. Every time I save a snapshot, it disappears whenever I click on a collections folder. It saves it--I can find the saved copies on my hard drive. But the program doesn't show them.

Moving your message from another thread (which was over a year old) here:
I am having the same problem...the things I save disappear. I am using 1.0.1.

A while ago I had had to use the Windows backup to fix my computer. At that time Zotero and all my files disappeared.

I recently decided to reinstall Zotero, and the collections folders reappeared, but not the files in them. When I decided to save a new file, and look at where it was stored, I found all my files still on my computer, but Zotero did not see them.

I tried fixing the database, deleting the database, deleting every file I could find associated with Zotero, and even reinstalling Zotero. Nothing works. It still loses track of every page or standalone note I save, although every file IS saved.

Could Firefox be storing info that needs deleting to fix this?
  • Could you clarify which types of items this happens for and the exact steps to reproduce it?

A bit of Zotero-world glossary to help out:

snapshots: web pages or other web documents (like images and PDFs) imported from the web

attachments: linked or imported files, imported snapshots, or web links; can be standalone or under another item

notes: the yellow things; can be standalone or under another item

items: references (Book, Journal Article, Web Page), notes, or attachments

files: actual individual files on disk

storage folder: the "storage" folder within the Zotero data directory, with a subfolder for each attachment item containing attachment files (such as HTML and image files)
  • Ok. First I'm using the Windows version. The only things I have used so far are the snapshots and notes features.

I have used both the default storage folder as well as a folder set up in my documents. Every snapshot I take ends up being saved in the storage folder. I can view snapshot and show file for the saved files, until I click on any collection. Then the program no longer sees the saved snapshot.

I click on the camera to save a shot. Looks good. Then I click on collections. When I do that the snapshot disappears. It doesn't matter whether I click on the collection that the snapshots is in, or some other collection. In either case I get the same results.

The above pasted quote made me remember that I lost my original collections after using the Windows Backup.
  • And what about in My Library? Do the snapshots not appear there either?

    1) Disable all other extensions except Zotero and see if that fixes the problem.

    2) If not, please create a new Firefox profile, install Zotero into that, and see if you can replicate the behavior.

If it works in the new profile, there's some sort of problem with your old database. Upload it to the DB Repair Tool and send us the Upload ID at support@zot....org. You can ignore the download links the tool provides.
  • Disabling extensions didn't help--I only had those that came with Firefox. But creating a new Firefox profile did work. Thanks. I'll send the old database.
