How to have the full author's initials again?

Hello,

I had a problem with the authors’s surname initials which appeared in my word text. So, I followed these instructions:
http://www.zotero.org/support/csl_simple_edits
But now I realize that it is not appropriate, because in the bibliography, the authors who have multiple names like that, and would have been presented like that
Bishop, D.V.M.
are now presented like this:
Bishop, D. … and this does not suit.
So I realize that I would not have done that
but rather go-through my library and change all the names.
How to do things in reverseto have
Bishop, D.V.M. and not
Bishop, D.?
Thank you.
Lucie
  • I forgot to say that I use the APA style.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Are there currently spaces between the initials in the authors' names in your Zotero library? It sounds to me like D.V.M. is being treated as a single word, a single name. What if you change it to D. V. M. (i.e., with spaces) in the item data in Zotero?
  • You are right. Thank you very much.

  • I realize that, now, my bibliography is presented correctly. But I have still one problem: In my text, there are quotes which appear like this:
    (M. J. Snowling & Hulme, 2005)
But I want it appears like this:
    (Snowling & Hulme, 2005)

This problem seems to exist with some of the authors which have one or several first names. For exemple, there is no problem with Bishop: it well appears like that
    (Bishop, 2001; Simkin & Conti-Ramsden, 2006).

But the problem do exists with Snowling. It appears like that:
    (M. J. Snowling, Bishop, & Stothard, 2000)
and also Bird. It appears like that:
    (J. Bird, Bishop, & Freeman, 1995; Bishop & Adams, 1990)

    Thank you for your help.

  • I tried to do what is shown here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/csl_simple_edits
I managed to follow the instructions until the section "Get it Back Into Zotero"
    But now I'm stucked.
I saved my code CSL as "Lucie1.csl.txt. The extension is. txt
    Should the extension be. csl?
If yes, I do not see how to do (I have windows XP on my computer).
Then, I do not understand what means "Drag The file (from Where You saved it) Into a Firefox page, and click Install.": when I drag the file on my Mozilla firefox icon on my desktop, there is anywhere to click on "install". I'm sorry not to be so smart with computers ...
    Thank you for your help.

  • The extension should be indeed be .csl

In order to change the extension: right-click the filename "Lucie1.csl.txt" and select "Rename". Then delete the ".txt" and press Enter.

If you can't see the extension you first need to: 1. Click "Start" and select "Control Panel." Next, double-click "Folder Options." From there, choose the "View" tab.
2.Uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" and click "OK."

  • yes it should be .csl.
To get that, right click on the file, rename, delete .txt, OK if Windows warns you.
Now when you drag the file to Firefox you'll get a pop-up which asks you if you want to install.
  • Hello,

    Thank you for your advice.
Actually, I dared not change the file extension because Windows said me:
"if you change file extension, file may become unusable".
    Now everything is OK.
    Really thank you
  • Please do note that the disambiguation may actually be required -- you should make sure that you do not in fact have multiple authors with the same last name. If you do, make sure that your style guide does not require disambiguation. If you don't, make sure that the first names of your authors are entered consistently, as described at http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/given_name_disambiguation .

Disabling disambiguation addresses your specific needs, but Zotero is doing it for a reason, and you can address that cause as well.
  • OK. Thank you
