Attached files (pdf) do not open in a diferent computer

Hi,

Sorry in advance if this has been discussed and solved before, but I couldn't find a solution in the forums.

I have installed Zotero in two different computers. I added more storage to my account in order to have access to my pdf attachments from both computers (I have used 87% of my storage). I also have placed the zotero folder in a folder of "dropbox" which is shared by the two computers (this folders includes the pdf's files).

Once I enter an item in computer A, I can see it in Computer B. But the attachment to that item can be just open in computer A. If I try to open it in B, I'll get the message:

"The attached file could not be found. It may have been moved or deleted outside of Zotero"

Is there any way in which I can access my pdf files from the two computers, independently of from which computer the original attachment was made?

Thank you very much.

Manuel
  • also have placed the zotero folder in a folder of "dropbox"
This is not needed if you're using Zotero's own data and file syncing. It can also put your data at risk of corruption.

Ensure that you have file sync enabled on both machines & ensure you have waited for the sync to complete. This can take a while, but yes: this is precisely the preferred method of accessing files on either computer.

In general syncing with Zotero storage will do exactly that.
I can't tell you why it's not working - are you sure file-syncing is activated in the preferences? (Gears menu --> Preferences --> Sync)?
    Do you otherwise sync reliably?
Can you access the pdfs in your online library?

Also, using dropbox to sync the Zotero folder is strongly discouraged - if you sync while both computers are on with Firefox open you may permanently (and possibly irreparably) corrupt your database).

Edit: noksagt beat me to it.
  • Thanks for your answers!

First thing I did: I moved back the zotero folder from Dropbox to the profile folder in Firefox in both computers. I set up that folder as the "data directory location" in preferences.

    2. I synced the library in both computers until was finished (the arrow stop moving).

    3. I made sure "sycn attachment files..." were active in both computers (in the box there is zotero, in oposition to WebDAV).

    4. I added an item in computer A and attached it to a pdf file. Sync.

    5. Open Zotero in computer B. The item is there and it shows the attachment. However, it didn't open and I get the same message ""The attached file could not be found..."

Following Adamsmith advice, I checked my online library. The items show the attachments, but I cannot access them. When I click on the pdf link I get the information (tittle, item type, dates) but not the actual file.

    Any suggestion?

Thanks to both of you for your help.

  • OK - you're doing everything right as far as I can tell, but file sync isn't happening at all or you'd be able to access the pdf online.

Dan will have to take a look probably.
One last thought - if you're using 87% of your storage, a lot of your files are/were synced - maybe you can check some of your older files in the online library and check their attachments.
  • Thank for your fast answer.

I checked several attachments from old and new items in the online library. None of them open. Just the information.

Now that you mention the storage space, I notice something:

In Zotero settings I see I've used 87% of the 1GB storage quota. However, when I look at the size of the storage folder, is 4.31 GB and has 73,612 items! However in my library I have 689 items and probably 40% of them have a file attached (almost sure all of the pdf's and 2 word documents).

Do you think this is related to the problem?
  • well, the number of items are due to snapshots, where one single snapshot can contain hundreds of individual files.
Beyond that I just don't know what's going on.
  • Dan, thanks for the link.

I did as suggested: from the computer where I originally did the attachments (a), I went to preferences, sync, reset and selected "reset file sync history". Then I synced again. It took two days syncing until the green arrow stopped moving (what I assumed as sync completed). I synced computer b. Did not work so I repeated the process. Sadly, I still cannot open the files from "my library" neither from computer b.

Another suggestion will be very appreciated.

    Thank you.
  • That output does not appear to be for a sync immediately after performing Reset File Sync History and does not appear to include an attempt at opening the file.
