Entire collections/subcollections gone missing

I've been putting together a collection on my dissertation chapter, and today after shutting down and restarting my computer I see that the entire collection is gone - I still have collections on other topics, but the big one that I've been working on for days has disappeared. Most (not all) sources are still in my library but they're not organized anymore. How could this have happened? Is there any way to get my work back?
  • Most likely you hit Delete accidentally while the collection was selected. Data doesn't really just disappear.

If by some chance you haven't yet synced to the server (as determined by the tooltip on the sync icon), you could immediately disable auto-sync in the Sync pane of the Zotero preferences and check your library on zotero.org. If it's there, it's possible to restore it easily.

Otherwise you could revert to the last automatic backup of your database, but that may or may not be from before the collection was deleted and you may have added materials since.
  • Thanks for the response - I'm new to this and still figuring things out. I was able to restore everything.
