Citation no longer exists in zotero

Hello,

I am a new Zotero user. I am a PC user with Word 2007. A colleague and I are working on a document together and have created a group library.

When I try to add a citation a different citation becomes highlighted and a window appears telling me 'Item 1 in this citation no longer exists in your Zotero database. Do you want to select a substitute item? Clicking "No" will delete the field codes for citations containing this item, preserving the citation text but deleting it from your bibliography.' I have three options: yes, no or cancel.

The reference is still in my database and when I reselect it to replace the citation it then proceeds to tell me there is another citation with the same problem.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Thanks,
Ashley
  • Probably you're doing something wrong.

When you're citing something you need to use the citation from the group and _not_ from your regular library, even if they look the same to you. The same applies to your co-author.
Otherwise Zotero won't recognize the respective citations once you exchange the document.
  • thanks for your suggestions.

all the citations in the document are from the group library. I have not added any as when I attempt to I have this error even before I can select a library. When I send her a document, she can open, edit and make additions perfectly fine. It is like there is only a problem when the document come from her to me. We are using the same version of zotero (2.0.8) however, I am a PC user and she is a Mac user. Therefore we are using different word processor plugins (3.0a4 - me and 3.0b3 - her).

Right-click on one of the citations that shows up as missing (before you replace it) and click Toggle Field Codes, and then paste the field code here.
  • i did as you said and I see codes but then when i copy it here it appears normal (see below)
(Engelen et al., 1994; Wongsamuth and Doran, 1997)

this is what the code looks like (re-typed by me)
    { ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM {"citationItems":[{"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/170240/items/NI53J37T"]},{"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/170240/items/294EVIF5"]}]} }
  • Right, those are user library items, not group library items. Tell your colleague to cite from the group library, not from her personal library.
  • okay. we will give it a try. Thank you very much for your help!
  • Hi. I don't have any group libraries, just using My library for all the sources, and still got the same problem today, when i started editing my document on another PC... I had to add the missing sources to the library again, and then it stopped. I wonder if that might be a sync problem, that some of the sources didn't get synced from the laptop's browser.

Anyways, i have to say, it was rather annoying ,) but good that not all the sources were affected, at least!
  • lisagri - that doesn't just happen out of the blue sky.
Probably your sync wasn't done or there was a sync error.
  • lisagri: http://zotero.org/support/kb/changes_not_syncing and start a new thread if you're still having trouble.
