Hyperlinks in standalone notes should open web pages

Hi,
I feel like I'm missing something. I put a hyperlink in a standalone note, but when I click on it it won't open the actual web page.
I know that I could just add the web page as an item in the zotero library outside of the note, but then why are hyperlinks and edit hyperlinks options in the standalone note if you can't use them like hyperlinks?
I've tried combination's of control/alt/shift while clicking and still no joy.
Please tell me if I'm just missing something!

Kind regards,
  • I believe this has come up before and simply doesn't work due to the nature of the note editor (though the hyperlinks will work if the note is included in a report, which is one of the reason they are there).
Since the note editor uses third-party code, this is unlikely to change unless it is addressed by the folks over at TinyMCE.
  • Thanks for your reply. I thought I was going mad! Also thanks for the link through to TinyMCE. I try and hassle them ;)
    Cheers

It's not necessary to ask them—if you do a search you'll see that it's come up before, and the answer (in that thread, at least) is to add a button to switch to read-only mode, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense within Zotero. Any solution in Zotero would likely need to be Zotero-specific, in terms of both interface and implementation. The first step would be to figure out how exactly one would trigger opening of a link within the editor.
  • Cool thanks for your input Dan! I'll re-post this as a feature request rather than trouble shoot. Hopefully our comments won't disappear...

Previous threads on links and related fun in TinyMCE include:
    http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/8306/testing-zoteroselect/
    http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/6393/spell-check-notes/

Really, we should switch to something else, but the Zotero team can't afford to write it from scratch, and no serious replacements have been found. In the first thread, I suggested adding a TinyMCE onClick action for links -- it should be possible, but I don't really enjoy diving in unfamiliar JavaScript, so I haven't really explored it.

In the second thread above, I suggested Mozilla's Midas, which would be ideal if it hadn't been abandoned (it seems) by Mozilla.
  • Also, in case it was unclear, by "figure out how exactly one would trigger opening of a link within the editor" I meant how it would work for users (modifier key, etc.).
  • I like Shift-Click. Shift-Ctrl-Click to open in new tab. As I've mentioned before, this would be really quite nice with select:// URLs.
  • Hey ajlyon. Great links. The spell checker would be another awesome addition.
Looking at Gmail when you switch between reading an email and replying (like toggling between read only mode and edit using the terminology from Dan's post) it brings up a 'goto link' box with the hyperlink available to then click. Is that the 'unfamiliar onClick' action in JavaScript you were discussing ajlyon? And perhaps it also answers Dan's point of how it would work at the user end of things?
  • I'd happily settle for a Ctrl-click or any combination of keyboard button and mouse click
