Scripts in Word 2008 non-english Mac

Been here before and I finally want to solve the problem.
System: Mac OSX 10.4.11
Mac WOrd 2008
Zotero 2.0.8
Zotero Word Int 3.0b3

I have read all postings reg. Scripting Menu in Word 2008, BUT:

Question 1

What is the name of the folder / single containing Items I have to move into the Scripting folder?
I have 3 Zotero Folders:
- zotero@chnm.gmu.edu
- zotero
- zoteroMacWordIntegration@zotero.org
ALL these folders are in User>Library>Appl.Support>Firefox

Question 2:

When finally moving the right items into the Scripting Folder, opening the Script Menu in Word 2008, clicking on "Open Menu Folder", what happens next? I tried to move manually MacWord.py into the Scripting folder, and when I clicked on it from within Word, Terminal would open.

Sorry for bringing up the topic again, but I hope to be finally able to switch from 2004 to 2008...

Thankx

  • What exactly is the problem? Are you missing the Zotero submenu in Word's script menu?

    http://zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting#scripts_do_not_appear_in_word_2008_or_are_incompatible

Tell us exactly what you've done from there and what you see when you click Open Folder. You shouldn't have to install scripts manually.
  • Yes, I miss the submenu and have read the posted links.

    Klicking Scripts Sign I See:

    - Info for Menu
    - - Exampleworkflows for automator

I know that I have to klick "Info for Menu" and then "open the folder", but as stated above, I dont understnd from the documented discussion, what items exactly to move into the folder. I have also reinstalled Zotero plugin.
  • To be precise, Zotero plugin is not installed on "~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Word Script Menu Items to the equivalent folder for your non-English version of Office" or other User Data folder, but in the above stated Firefox Folders.
  • I know that I have to klick "Info for Menu" and then "open the folder", but as stated above, I dont understnd from the documented discussion, what items exactly to move into the folder.
Right, but where do you end up when you click that? What's the folder called, and what folder is it within? Do you have both English and non-English versions of the "Microsoft User Data" folder, and have you looked within both?
I have also reinstalled Zotero plugin.
OK, but have you clicked Reinstall Word Components? What happens when you do?
  • YES, nothing is in the folders.
    Nothing happens when I reinstall.

The folder is named in German
    "Microsoft-Benutzerdaten"
    location: user>documents

then the Script folder is English
exists twice named "Word Script Menu Items"
    1. user>documents>Microsoft-Benutzerdaten
    2. mainboard>programs>ms office 2008>office>office first run>mud
  • in both folders is another folder in German "Beispielworkflows für Automator", but no zotero
  • Nothing happens when I reinstall.
Provide a Report ID after clicking Reinstall Word Components.
  • And to clarify, for Word 2008, it's not possible to copy files manually from the extension directory (and the instructions don't say to do so). So we'd have to figure out why the installer isn't working for you.
  • "And to clarify, for Word 2008, it's not possible to copy files manually from the extension directory (and the instructions don't say to do so). So we'd have to figure out why the installer isn't working for you. "

I understand, I just did give it a try, because nothing else worked.
  • "Provide a Report ID after clicking Reinstall Word Components."

    > Bug report button stays grey in Zotero after reinstalling.

What I do: I close Word. In Firefox I go to add-ons>Zotero Word Integration, click preferences. I click "reinstall word components" when its blue. The window becomes grey, goes background, and nothing else happens.

Then I look up the folder
    "zoteroMacWordIntegration@zotero.org"

This folder is to be found in
    user>library>appl.support>firefox>profiles>sb0qguf8.default>extensions

Within the folder the folders "pylib" and "defaults" are updated.

Please Note: I use also Word 2004, here Zotero works perfect.

Do I have to do anything else to get a report ID?

Should I rename my "Microsoft Benutzerdaten"-folder in English?

    Thanks

Forget about zoteroMacWordIntegration@zotero.org — you can't copy files from there.
Please Note: I use also Word 2004, here Zotero works perfect.
Oh, OK. My guess is that Zotero is detecting Word 2004 but not Word 2008, and that's why it's not displaying an error. Is the Word 2008 application located at /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word? If not, it needs to be for the installation to work, and then when you do Reinstall Word Components Zotero should copy the files into the English Microsoft User Data folder, after which you can move them to the localized folder (or you could just remove the English folder and it should prompt you for the localized folder name).
  • Ok.
Word is at: /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word

As stated above I have 2 Microsoft user data folders, one named in German, one named "mud"

    "1. user>documents>Microsoft-Benutzerdaten
    2. mainboard>programs>ms office 2008>office>office first run>mud"

Do I have to rename both? Exactly "Microsoft User Data"?
  • Word is now there because you just moved it there, or it was there before? If the former, just Reinstall Word Components.
  • Word was there already (Word 2008)
  • Is there another Applications folder on your system? A German equivalent?
  • Both MS Office (2004/2008) are in the folder "Programme" aka applications. <No xtra folder
  • Wait, so not in /Applications? I meant "Applications" literally—please don't translate when troubleshooting.

Word 2008 needs to be at /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word when you click Reinstall Word Components.
  • Aha, sorry. So, do I have to rename all my German folders?
  • Its a mix, Library is library, but allications are programme. i didnt do it...
  • applications
  • Just move "Microsoft Office 2008" to /Applications/ and click Reinstall Word Components. You can move it back afterward if you want (though future updates will also look in /Applications).

That is, create /Applications if it doesn't exist and move it there. Safer than renaming anything.

Zotero tries to detect Word even if it's not in /Applications, but that doesn't always work for some reason. (It seems it's working for Word 2004 for you, but that uses a different method.)
  • Ahhhh, this is weird, OsX does not want me to create a new folder named "Applications" on the mainboard-level: it says that it already exists.
  • Renaming is not possible. Will I have to run my system in English to use Zotero.....?
  • What about my two folders

    "1. user>documents>Microsoft-Benutzerdaten
    2. mainboard>programs>ms office 2008>office>office first run>mud"

I could rename these into Microsoft User Data

Don't worry about those folders for the moment—they're not even coming into play, since Zotero doesn't think you have Word 2008 installed.

So Simon (whose code this is) might have other suggestions, but one thing you could try is opening up extensions/zoteroMacWordIntegration@zotero.org/components/install.py in a text editor (open TextEdit and drag it into there) and changing this line:

    wordInAppsDir = applicationsFolder.path+"/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word.app"

    to this

    wordInAppsDir = "/Programme/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Word.app"

and then resaving it. (Don't change any other lines or change any whitespace—just edit that line in place.) Then do Reinstall Word Components again.

This is just a guess, but it might do the trick. If not, it might also help if you could open Terminal (use Spotlight to find it) and type this:

    ls -la /
followed by Return. Then let us know what the output is, since we may be able to put out another version that fixes this.
  • Will I have to run my system in English to use Zotero.....?
    No.
  • install.py is not in the folder and neither on the system.
components has zoteroIntergrationApplication.py, but this does not contain "wordInAppsDir"

    other are

folder install contains; install.scpt, also does not contain the line above (used text edit search function)

    main folder has install .rdf.

Its midnight here, I ll try tomorrow again.
    Thanks for your patience

Sorry, I was looking at a newer version. Install the 3.0 Branch MacWord Integration plugin dev XPI (not the trunk, and not the 2.0 Branch dev XPI of Zotero itself) over your current version and restart Firefox. Try Reinstall Word Components again. If that doesn't fix the problem on its own, you should at least see the install.py file in the location I specified and should be able to make the above edit.
  • Now it works, wonderful, thank you!

It worked by installing the "3.0 Branch MacWord Integration plugin dev XPI". Anything I will have to pay attention to for future updates?
