Error ID 631312235 Syncing failure

I just started using Zotero, and after entering four items, got a message that "a file sync error occurred." Restarted Firefox; same problem. Restarted computer; same problem. I just downloaded the newest versions of both Firefox and Zotero (not the Beta), so I'm already using the most up-to-date versions. This problem occurred after I attached a pdf to an item.
  • Unexpected status code 401 caching authentication credentials in Zotero.Sync.Storage.Session.ZFS.getLastSyncTime()
This might indicate a problem in your Firefox installation or your network. Are you using any security software? (If so, try disabling it.) Are you behind a proxy? (If so, and this is a laptop, try from a different network.)

You can also try creating a new Firefox profile, pointing it to your original Zotero data directory from the Advanced pane of the Zotero prefs, and trying to sync from there.
  • I tried creating a new Firefox profile -- and that meant I had to download Zotero all over again! (Because when I created the new profile, Zotero disappeared). Very confusing, but I figured it out. However, it did not solve the problem. I do not know what it means to be "behind a proxy," but I am on a desktop. And of course I run security software -- to be honest, I'm not sure why ANYONE would use software that requires disabling their security software! However, I cannot disable my security software -- I believe it is network based. I'm working on a computer in my university office. A colleague of mine uses Zotero on this same network with the same security system with no problems.
  • This is how debugging works—I wasn't suggesting that you leave your security software disabled, nor suggesting that Zotero requires it.

But if you get the same 401 error in a new Firefox profile, there may not be much we can do for you, since something about your setup—quite possibly on your network—appears to be preventing file syncing from working. Is your colleague using Zotero file syncing?
  • Part of the problem may be that I do not understand what it means to "point" my Firefox profile to my original Zotero data directory and "sync from there". All I did was create a new profile, which caused zotero to disappear. So I reinstalled Zotero, and syncing still doesn't work.

My colleague has no trouble using Zotero file syncing on campus, so I don't see how it could be a network issue or an issue with the university's security system.
  • I just discovered the "My Library" tab and it appears that syncing IS working, even though I have continuously had a red error button and error message. I even did a test just now -- added something and then put it in a collection. Hit sync. Got the error message. But the syncing happened anyway.

So it says it is not working, but it is working -- which is good, but also annoying.

When you create a new Firefox profile, you need to install Zotero into it. But it sounds like you did that. So what does "syncing still doesn't work" mean? Send in another Report ID after trying to sync in the new profile if you want to tell you if it's the same error.

It's a file sync error. Metadata syncing is working for you fine, so you'll see your data online. But your files won't sync while you're having this problem.
