Adding additional citation styles

Hi,

I can not seem to add additional citation styles. In Preferences -> Style Manager when I click get additional styles I get to the default/additional styles page. I click install files. It seems to install fine, but the installed file doesn't get added to the Style Manager. I have also downloaded the .csl file to my computer and used the + button to upload the style. The process seems to go fine, but I still can't find the added style in the Style Manager. What am I missing?

Cheers, Jeff

Zotero 2.0.8
Firefox 3.6.9
Ubuntu 10.04
  • what exactly happens when you click on one of the install links in the style repository?
    http://www.zotero.org/styles

Also, note that styles aren't ordered alphabetically - neither in the plugin nor in the style manager.
  • When I click on the install links I get a small window with the CANCEL and INSTALL buttons and the text

Install style "Science journal (dev)" from http://www.zotero.org/styles/science/dev?install=1?

When I click the INSTALL button the window closes. The same thing happens with other styles
  • OK - that sounds right.
Could you, just so we're on the same page, install the style Socio-Economic Review
    http://www.zotero.org/styles/socio-economic-review/dev?install=1

then check if it shows up in the style manager.

if not, check if you can find the style
    socio-economic-review.csl
in the styles folder of your zotero data directory

My zotero data directory is in

    /home/jlb/.mozilla/firefox/r0skld0q.default/zotero/styles

Neither the socio-economic-review.csl nor the science.csl files are in this directory and I can't seem to find them elsewhere.

I downloaded the science.csl file to my computer and moved it into this directory. I can now see the science.csl files in the Style Manager (after restarting Firefox). This is one solution, but probably not the best.
  • actually, just moving your style there is all that "installing" it in Zotero does, too.
But it's weird that this isn't working otherwise.
can you search for socio-economic-review.csl to see if the installer places it somewhere else?
  • Provide a Report ID after installing via Firefox.
  • It doesn't show up anywhere else using locate after updatedb.

However, that still doesn't explain why I can't use the Style Manager to upload the socio-economic-review.csl and science.csl files I saved to my home directory. As with the web install it looks like it goes smoothly, but the style doesn't appear in the Style Manager or the zotero/styles directory.

My styles folder is owned by root and the permissions are drwxr-xr-x. Thus, I needed to use sudo to move the .csl files here. Could this be an issue?

Uh, yes. Nothing in your Zotero directory (or your Firefox profile directory, or your home directory for that matter) should be owned by root, since presumably (/hopefully) you're not running Firefox as root. Firefox needs to be able to write to the directory for Zotero to add a style.

And there's no need for a Report ID now—it'll just show a permissions error.

If I change the zotero/styles permissions from root to jlb. I can add styles using the web install and the + button for downloaded .csl files. The following files/dir are all owned by root, everything else is owned by jlb. I don't see anything else in Firefox that is owned by root and I am not running Firefox as root. Odd, since I know that I did not set this to root.

    styles
    translators
    zotero.sqlite.36.bak
  • you should transfer all of them to your jlb account permanently.
  • If you copied them from another account using sudo they'd be owned by root. Firefox certainly couldn't have done it itself unless you ran it as root. You would've had to enter your root password one way or another.
  • All set. Thanks!

I can't remember what I did in setting up this computer last month, but I know I had problems with Open Office connecting with Firefox/Zotero and found some work around.
