Pdfs are not automatically atteched

Sorry if the solution to my problem already stands somewhere in the support, but I can't find it.
I simply want to attech PDFs to my citation and then search through the atteched PDF files. I already ticked the right button under general options and I already downloaded the two programs to index pdfs and i already tried out the advanced and basic search. But I doubt that the problem is the search function but rather that there is no pdf atteched or not indexed. Even If I attech a PDF manually Zotero doesn't show me this PDF as a result if I search for words in this PDF even though it is possible that Zotero shows me the atteched snapshot.

Has anybody an idea what I should do now?
  • PDFs aren't saved automatically on all sites, so you'd have to provide specific examples, with URLs, of sites you're saving from.

For indexing, Zotero can only index PDFs that have embedded text. In other words, if you open the PDF in a PDF viewer, can you search for text? Again, we'd need a specific example to tell you what was happening.
  • The site I tried to save the PDF from was:
    http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/detail?vid=3&hid=110&sid=94ead381-8256-4e7b-8748-1ef1874ed899%40sessionmgr111&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#db=psyh&AN=1956-00801-001

    and I also tried:
    http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/resultsadvanced?vid=2&hid=110&sid=94ead381-8256-4e7b-8748-1ef1874ed899%40sessionmgr111&bquery=%28Simon%29+and+%28DT+1955%29&bdata=JmRiPXBzeWgmdHlwZT0xJnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d

The PDF has an embedded text. You can find it under
    http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=4&hid=110&sid=94ead381-8256-4e7b-8748-1ef1874ed899%40sessionmgr111
  • The EBSCOhost translator was broken until a couple days ago, and PDF saving still isn't working.

But saving the PDF manually and adding it to the Zotero item should cause it to be indexed as long as you've installed the indexing tools from the Search pane of the Zotero prefs. If you click on the PDF in Zotero, what does it say next to "Indexed" in the right-hand pane?
  • There stands "Yes" and two green arrows
  • And when you type "some general features" into the quick search bar, you don't see that PDF as a result? I do.
  • sorry, no. There is no entry shown in the middle pane...
  • Provide a Debug ID for clicking on the green arrows next to Indexed for that PDF.
  • I hope the Debug has reached you?
  • You will need to post the Debug ID here so Dan knows which output is yours.
  • The Debug ID is D1199250454
  • I'm not quite sure whether you got all the information you needed to understand the problem. If I should do anything else just tell me.
  • You're saving pdfviewer.html—EBSCO's PDF viewing page—rather than the actual PDF.

If you're saving a PDF manually and there's not a direct link, you need to save the PDF first and then drag the PDF into Zotero.
  • Thank you! Now it actually works. Is this a special problem of EBSCO or do I just want to much?
  • Well, sites with working translators will often attach the PDF automatically.

For other sites, any normal PDF link will work as you would expect—it's just that EBSCO has an intermediate page. Some other sites have that too, but it's still an exception.
  • Thanks a lot for your help. I never experienced a program with a support as good as yours. Thank you very very much!
