Install problem with Zotero, Dropbox

I have been using Zotero 2.0 for awhile on my existing two Macs (iMac and MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard 10.6, Firefox 3.6.3, Zotero 2.0.3), using a data directory located on Dropbox to synchronize between the two of them. This still works well.

Starting in a new office, I now am trying to install Zotero on a new Mac desktop (10.6.4), with a network managed profile (although I do have admin privileges). I've installed Firefox 3.6.8 and Zotero 2.0.3, but now I can't open the Zotero window at all, and it shows a yellow (!) triangle.

When I try to configure the Zotero plugin in the add-on window, and to direct the data directory to my Dropbox, it first freezes up, and then shows a long string of characters for the data directory. I then can't change the data directory at all.

Regards,

David
  • Third party syncing of the data directory is discouraged, as there is no good way for the utilities to keep your zotero.sqlite file in sync. Trying to use a third-party tool to sync the data directory can definitely cause (irksome) sync conflicts and many third-party tools can cause actual corruption of the zotero database.

This sounds to me like an issue with dropbox and/or with your network-managed profile & not with Zotero.

Presumably, there is more information if you really want to troubleshoot your unsupported configuration. I don't think that you do, but see:

  • Hi all, I solved this problem. It was with my network managed profile.

FWIW, I've found Zotero and Dropbox together to be much better than Zotero Sync.
