Translator

I'm confused! But nothing seems to work anymore. You announce Flickr support and I go to Flickr and I don't see the Zotero icon in my browser, I go almost anywhere and I don't see it. The power of Zotero is to have the information automatically retrieved, why is this not happening? Is there something I have to do - it doesn't work for Flickr, not for Science Direct, not for Epicurious (I'm just trying all the places that you say it will work), and it doesn't. Please help, I'm pretty frustrated at this point.
  • Both Flickr and Epicurious work just fine for me on Linux. Have you updated to the most recent version of Zotero? Also, are there any errors listed in "Report Errors..." (in the Zotero gear icon)?
  • Thanks for your reply,

I'm using v1.0.1 which I assume is the latest. I"m using it on a Windows XP machine and it doesn't work either on my office or home computer. Again, very frustrating, there must be some setting that I need to fix (guessing).
  • Hmm.

I have a question about your original post: when you mentioned that you don't see the Zotero icon in your browser, were you referring to the icon in the Firefox address bar or to the icon that says "Zotero" in the Firefox status bar (lower right corner by default)?
  • The icon in the address bar so that I can click and save the citaions - I have the Zotero icon in the lower right corner.
  • OK. Are you able to save any other items to your Zotero Library? For example, if you click on the "Take Snapshot of Current Page" button in the Zotero toolbar, is a snapshot of the page you're viewing added?

Also, you might try to rebuild the translators table. (Click on the Gear icon in the Zotero toolbar, then Preferences... -> Advanced -> Rebuild Translators Table). I don't know why that would be needed if you've just installed Zotero, but it's what I'd try.
  • Yes. Zotero works by taking a snapshot, it's just the translators don't seem to be recognizing the pages that they should - if I'm using the right words. I did try doing a Rebuild as I saw that mentioned in another post but still no icon. Thanks for your help on this BTW.
  • Some other ideas:

    • Are you accessing the web using any kind of proxy?

    • Have you tried a site like the BBC? For example, if you visit the following address, what appears in the address bar (which address and is there a newspaper icon on the right)?
      http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7098902.stm

    • Are there any errors listed in "Report Errors..." (Zotero Gear icon)?
  • I'm not behind any proxy, just accessing via my cable ISP host. When I click on the link you sent me I don't see the newspaper icon, just an RSS feed icon. I looked under Report Errors and there is an error being reported, that I sent on to Zotero - I couldn't figure out what the error might be, but I"ll copy it here:

[JavaScript Error: "junk after document element" {file: "http://us.mg2.mail.yahoo.com/dc/launch?.rand=3am292q1feher" line: 1 column: 416 source: "OceanChromeTangerineVioletGrassBubblegum -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------^"}]

Are you using a custom Firefox theme? I'm thinking that "OceanChromeTangerineVioletGrassBubblegum" might possibly refer to something in a theme. That's just a guess, though.

If you are using a custom theme, could you try switching to the default Firefox theme and see if the problems continue?

Also, "ytoolbar" seems to refer to the Yahoo toolbar. If you have that installed, you could try disabling it. Maybe that will make a difference.
  • Took off the tool bar and reverted back to the default and nothing :-(

I wonder if I un-installed Zotero and re-installed it, but then what would happen to the citations I already have?
  • Instead of uninstalling/reinstalling, you could try making a new Firefox profile, which would have everything at default values, and then installing Zotero there. This would not touch your current Zotero database and storage folder, since these are stored within a particular profile folder, and you'd be making a new one of those. I'd think that this approach would at least help you to rule out a theme problem or conflict with other extensions, something you'd not see by reinstalling to the same profile you're using now.

Instructions for making a new profile can be found here:
    http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile#new
  • Yes, reinstalling Zotero doesn't really do anything, so trying a fresh profile is the best approach.

Also note that those errors you're seeing under Report Errors aren't related to Zotero and don't indicate a conflict, though that doesn't mean there isn't one with some extension or another. If a fresh profile does work, you might try disabling all other extensions in your original profile to see if that fixes things.
