Please export ISBN from Google books

I just tried to create a biblography item from a page displaying a book on google books. To my surprise the ISBN number where not exported to the clip board.

What is the reason for this? Maybe I just misunderstand this, but it would be quite convenient to have this or maybe a doi number in the referens.

I don't quite understand - do you see the ISBN number in Zotero in the ISBN field?
Zotero's google book translator will grab the ISBN when it's there.

The reason it's not in the bibliographic reference is that very, very few bibliographic styles require an ISBN in the reference - Zotero can put it there, though, by modifying an existing style using the line
    <text variable="ISBN"/>
    see
    http://www.zotero.org/support/csl_simple_edits
for more information on how to edit styles.

Books usually don't have DOIs, unless they're e-books or have an e-book version. Many styles (e.g. APA 6th edition) will print the DOI wherever it exists and is in Zotero.
  • Thanks Adam,

This was mostly exactly what I thought and hoped for.

It feels a bit strange that books normally do not have DOIs, especially now that Google Books have links to most of them. Are we going to depend solely on Google for links? Or is there a non-private database for ISBN?
  • DOIs for academic work are assigned by CrossRef - most books currently don't have DOIs. Just because they're on google doesn't mean they have a DOI. That said, at some point Zotero will/should add that option for books and books section as the number of books that do is increasing - here is the relevant thread:
    http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/8014/no-doi-field-for-books/#Item_11

I don't understand the last part about google. When books _are_ assigned DOIs they will most likely point to the publisher or e-book host, not to google books.
Also, Zotero isn't using google books for anything at the moment. (you can import from google books, but that's also true for Amazon, most library catalogues etc.)
The ISBN lookup actually goes through worldcat (which is much more comprehensive).
  • Thanks for the explanation about DOI.

About google: I just meant that this seemed to me to be the place where you can find most books.

I did not know about worldcat. Can I search for a book using its ISBN number on worldcat? I can't find that possibility there. Or where can I do it?
  • you can search for books by ISBN on any decent library catalog. I usually go to library of Congress but yes, wordlcat works, too, use the advanced search:
    http://www.worldcat.org/advancedsearch

You can enter an ISBN in the "magic wand" field in Zotero and it will automatically add the bibliographic information of that book. That information comes from worldcat.
  • Ah, thanks, I was fooled by the "Keyword", I thought it was something else...

What I needed was a simple way to create a link from an ISBN and I see now both worldcat and google makes this possible. (It needs to be a bit more official so worldcat is probably best.)
